Sir,

You bring back very vivid memories. My first deployment after my son was born. He was two and recognized me when he saw me after 6 months. Immediately latched onto my neck and would not let go. I had to disentangle him and go back below after only 5 minutes because I was supervising a nuclear inspection --- until 6 am the next morning. The ORSE was not pleasant. His screaming for me as I went back below was worse.

The first time I met my daughter after she was born. I was immediately smitten. She almost died before I was even back in port and my wife never told me. My Father-in-Law was a Chief Master Sergeant with 23 yrs service in the Air Force. He had almost given up on my daughter's life, but my wife hadn't.

And the changes in my wife after dozens of deployments, always there, always the same, yet never the same. I'm not worth her spit.

The Hobbit is anything but a hobbit. You are a lucky man, sir. And I see you are an outstanding leader and a fine sailor. God Bless You and yours, CAPT Lex.

Press on.

Boy, does THAT bring back memories. I spent 3 1/2 years of a 2 year tour on the Ranger. I wasn't on the flight deck crew, but did get to pull the 20 hour days (except for when I worked the 48 hour days.) Being on a cruise always reminded me of beating your head agains the wall -- it feels so good when you stop !
