Whenever I visit one of my sons' schools, I make it a point to extend my hand and introduce myself to the custodians as I pass them in the hallway, ask their names, and thank them for enabling my boys to have a decent environment in which they can learn. I have yet to receive anything in return less than smiles which glow like the sun. They labor in anonymity and nobody, it seems, ever thanks them.

It seems to me the whole point of the DD's, the cruisers, the oilers, the sub escorts, etc., is for ten thousand, or so, sailors to get the pilot into the air and on target. Getting him, or her back aboard is a bonus.

But then, I'm fifty years out of service, and talking through my hat.

Thank you for your service, sir. Thank you for writing about it. May gentle winds fill your sails.

Thank you for bring up memories from 3 WESTPAC's in the 80's onboard the "Big E". It was great to get an officer's perspective after having been enlisted.

Ahh, yeah, the look of wonderment on a JO's face when he sees the light. Do ya'll senior officers ever have a pool on when the nugget will finally get it? Not saying that ever happened in the Goat Locker, of course. Hehe.

The nostalgia I feel is almost overwhelming.
Your writing is dead-on provoking.
Thanks for that.
I look forward to the next installment!
