I, being a novice at these sites, replied on-line to your 1/29/09 posting. Admiral Trum's daughter died 3/13/10.
Andrea has a daughter, Nichola, and a grandson Elliot Fortney, whom, I am sure would dearly like to obtain, or know the history of, their Grandfather/Great Grandfather's artifact. As a member of the class of 1966 I would be happy to purchase the article for presentation to the Trum family.

Reply to Michael Sheehan of 1/29/09. The timing would appear to about correct. I have not looked up Adm. Trum's graduation date from USNA. We know the family and his grand daughter would probably be very interested. His daughter recently (3/13/10) died. Contact me for further information if you wish. I do not wish to intrude upon their grieving.

I also served on Essex CVS9.

Happy to read this after all these years. I was on board the USS G K McKenzie DD836 operating with TF 77 in the "screen" and detached duty in Wonsan Harbor where our mission included bombardment and rescue coordination of pilots from the carriers (1951-2). You can read about it from the view point of Destroyer Personnel in the Website of the McKenzie; http//ussgkm (click box: KOREA WONSAN DIARY).

Those pilots were the greatest!!

"Ensign H. J. Trum" is the name written on the label of a black wool cloak I found in a thrift store. Does anyone know if this belonged to Cdr. Trum before he was promoted? The cloak was made by Jacob Reed's Sons of Philadelphia and is dated 1940. I paid $125 for it, but would like to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. it's in wonderful condition. Does anyone know how to contact the family to see if they're interested? What about collectors of memorabilia?

Captain Austin Wheelock went from the Essex to become Chief of Staff for Commander Air Force Pacific Fleet located at North Island Naval Air Station. The summer of 1952 he became Admiral Wheelock; it just so happened I delivered the message one Saturday evening that summer to him personally at his quarters on North Island. His daughter tells me he died of cancer in 1953. She at one time had written me seeking information about her dad. She was only about 14 when he went to sea and her mother and she just didn't commnicate all that well. As you can understand if you've had a daughter that at one time was 14. We had three.
When I, with VF-51 returned to the states in March 1952 and after most of the squadron had leaves they transferred me from VF-51 to CAP. I was Yeoman 3rd in then Captain Wheelock's office.
