I’ve been wondering in my Middle East security trained mind when and if the Sunni street in Iraq would figure out that the “enemy of my enemy” axiom doesn’t apply in this situation and the insurgency and terrorists were calling a dance for which the Sunni street would have to pay the piper.
I still believe there’s only two options for Iraq now. Either the Sunnis, Shi’a and Kurds agree to disagree and participate in civil government, or there’ll be a long-term, sectarian war of attrition the Sunnis can’t possibly win and the Kurds will largely sit out.
I have been out of the country, and out of touch with news for the last two weeks. This is interesting.
With the Shia and Sunnites finally heading for the big one, will the nice folks in D.C. start supporting a strong, free Kurdistan? The Kurds have been pro U.S., and the only issue seems to be the Turks not wanting their Kurdish minority to get any ideas of linking South, with the Iraqi Kurds.
I, for one, no longer care about our so called Allies in Turkey. Maybe now is the time to support winners, and maybe let the Iranians know that a possible “exit strategy” includes a course turn of 090 degrees.
Time for us to use initiative!
