Yes, Sir, it’s a goodie! Before I found you and other Milblogs, so I appreciate the repost. Brings a tear…

  • Thanks for recycling that one, Lex. It definately warms my heart. Brings back memories and makes me realize how much I took for granted back in the day.

So, does raising the Colors come before or after the Mexican flag? Oh well, at least they fly the Ensign in proper distress position.

It’s funny, people actually pay attention to the National Anthem nowadays. Just a few short years ago I’d have to constantly get onto kids at high school games to show some respect. Now? They all know someone serving. Their classmates from the upperclassmen when they entered high school are serving, some unfortunately making the ultimate sacrifice. It does the heart good to know these young people understand. Of their own accord no less!

But then we have the “honored guests” who simply do not care. It’s not their Flag so why worry. Right? Go to a school athletic event with a large Hispanic population and get back to me on the “respect” they pay our most cherished of traditions.

And yeah, I read your post below and was going to let it go until I read this one. It was only last week I had an altercation with a group of Hispanics at a soccer match. I’m afraid I do not like being spit on and do not have the compassion you do. You sir are a much finer man than I could ever be. The storm is blowing gale force and the attitude is now in place. To hell with our rule of law. They are emboldened sir and there is no turning back now.

There will be no quarter from me. Not anymore. Ever! I gave the benefit of the doubt and have had it thrown back into my teeth. Now it’s my turn!

Lex, you gave me goosebumps, which with only 2 sips of coffee into me yet this morning, isn’t fair. At. All.

I have always been more patriotic than my peers – both in school and now. My parents instilled in me a more-than-healthy respect for my country and its traditions. I’ve never seen a military raising of the colors. BUT one of the high points of my childhood was marching in the local Memorial Day Parade with my Girl Scout Troop (WAY back in the day…). And as we moved the line forward, swapping places with the girls in front, I suddenly found myself carrying the American Flag, all the way to the cemetary, where I handed it over to a WWII Veteran. I was only about 10 or 11 years old, but I still remember every second of having that flag in my hands.

    In today’s world, it resonates.

i have a local radio station that i listen to every weekday morning at 0730 while i commute to work…

they have recorded local grade school classes as they recite the Pledge of Allegiance.

never fails to get a lump in my throat.

Interesting comments, especially from the civilian folks.

Two weeks ago, I was teaching a powerboat course at a Navy Yacht club. I was five minutes late, and the class laughed as I walked in late. The students asked why late? I answered, “The Base Captain plays my favorite song, every morning. I had to stop and listen to it.”

It is always a pleasure to take a moment, during my favorite song, and remember those unable to be here, those who paid to hear “our song”.

Ever notice how there always seems to be warm sunshine, during Colors?
