I’m not going to do it…

I’m not going to say, “I told you so.”

Security threats to PCs with Microsoft Windows have increased so much that computer users should consider using a Mac, says a leading security firm.

Sophos security said that the 10 most commonly found pieces of malicious software all targeted Windows machines.

In contrast, it said, none of the “malware” were capable of infecting the Mac OS X operating system.

Microsoft has pledged that the latest version of its operating system, known as Vista, will be its most secure yet.

Meanwhile, Belfast shipmaker Harland and Wolff promised that their next cruise liner named “Titanic” will be even more unsinkable than the first.

  • Duh … 95% plus of all PC’s are … not Mac’s. What other result could you possibly expect?

There’s lots of stuff to smack Mr. Softie for. You on vacation ?-)

    Cheers,

  • You’ve added reason number 258 to my reasons of why I use iMacs and an iBook.

  • Kris, in New England

But…since the majority of workplaces used Windows, it makes sense that malicious attacks would be focused on Windows…

    Flame-bait – taken!

    Now: Set the hook!

I say again, you give me the money to buy a laptop that costs four times the one I just bought and I’ll happily use a Mac. ;)

Strange, I don’t visit strange sites, don’t allow strange downloads, run firefox (etc, etc) and don’t have a problem…

I saw an article that toyed with an idea of where Apple may be headed with the Intel chip based Mac’s.

The author mentioned the “Boot Camp” beta version that allows users to choose which system to boot up, either WIndows or Mac OSX.

He suggested the next step would be to boot up Windows within OSX. This would be similar to the current option of opening OS 9 as an application within OSX to use older applications that are only OS 9 compatible.

Windows would operate as an application within the OSX system architecture and current Windows applications would operate within that. But the system, would be OSX and would thus be protected from 99% of existing malware, viruses, etc. If Windows or a Windows app, like Internet Explorer (IE), got infected, it could be thrown away and reloaded without the system, as in OSX, being affected. No more complete hard disk wipes and reloading all applications for hours.

On the hardware cost side, the Mac mini is an inexpensive alternative “desktop” replacement that can integrate with the existing PC peripherals including montiors, keyboard/mouse and printer hardware.

Perhaps a Mac mini laptop is in the works. Either way, the system vs. virus battle mirror’s the history of offensive vs. defensive weaponry advancements. A Windows within OSX operation would provide protection for only a limited time.

On the other hand, Vista has been delayed time and again and must be updated each time a vulnerability to the existing Windows system is discovered if it would also affect the new version. IE looks like it may never be repairable without starting over completely. Perhaps Windows is in a similar spot.

Isn’t it interesting timing to see Bill Gates leaving Microsoft to run his charity?

  • Back in the early days….(I got my first Mac in 86…a 512K Mac)…there was a time when all the coolest games were out on the Mac (Falcon was on the Mac years before the PC) and the best apps, too (it took until Excel v. 5 on the PC to exceed the Mac versions). While I was using 256 colors and 8 bit sound in the 87-88 time frame, PC people spent less money and got a single toned “beep!” and 4 colors…unless…they spent as much on add in stuff to equal the cost of a Mac.

The very first PC virus was the “Scores” virus, and my buddies and I, who split up downloading of new stuff from GEnie (a “bulletin board system”), all got it on our Macs. It was easily fixed with ResEdit, but…we had it.

Then one day, all the new games and apps were coming out for the PC market. We complained, but the economics said Apple had 13% of the market (and that was Macs and the vast Apple II series in many school system), and the rest were essentially PC. Same issue here. The hackers and bored high school kids can affect so many more by exploiting the bugs in Windows based paltforms for the same effort….

Which, has made the Macs a “safe haven” for the time being.

    Everything old is new again….

Sim…. you’re here aren’t you? This can be a pretty strange site from time to time.

  • Jeff

Ah.. “Vista”. We couldn’t, of course, just have a download that fixes the problems. No. No. And.. no. We have to get those upgrades in the new version of the OS which we have to
    …purchase.

Come on Lex, Mac is DONE. I use Opera and Norton and never have a %^&**&*&*%$#%$^%&*(&*)&)*(*()_)+_

  • Gee, FbL, You got a laptop for $250? That is pretty good… (ducking)

Oh, and Capt Lex, re running Windows on a Mac if necessary Parallels (www.parallels.com) is looking promising for running virtual Windows (or Linux) in a Mac window so you don’t have to dual boot it.

I’m with Sim (post 6 above). Apple sure is proud ($$$) of their O/S and hardware. Then again, almost all of the specialized software I use only runs on Windows ™. Anyone want to bring the penguin crowd in on the flame war? How about the IBM mainframe vs any other crowd?
Ford vs Chevy? General Practitioner vs Homeopathic practitioner? Come on people, PCs are just t-o-o-l-s. And this endless debate about my dick is bigger that yours errrrrrrrrrr my MAC is better than your PC is just tiresome. (snapon vs craftsman anyone?)
