Yes Lex, thank you. Goes great with my Starbucks coffee this morning…great wake-me-up.

Those canard edges can be sharp. The ordies call ‘em “missile bites”.

Is it still a “Lipwinder,” as in “shoot them in the face with a Lipwinder,” or do they have a new nickname?

  • lex

I haven’t heard that expression since the A-7s went away, Jonboy – guess we’re all showing our age ;-)

CPT J – the canards can getcha, but the worst I ever got off a Sidewinder was when I was checking the seeker head. The cover was attached to the fin by a bungee cord, and I thought I’d just pull the cover off while leaving the bungee attached, stretching it out, like. Dern thing came of the canard and zapped me right in the eye, full on. I almost threw up, it hurt that bad.

    Then I went flying.

    Sidewinder upgrade?

    Yep, I’m confused and guessing…

Everything you need to know about the -8 is right here, Sim.

You just need to be able read Polish ;-)

  • What an outstanding piece of ordnance. Sometimes the simple things are also the best.

  • It has been said that the design goals for the original Sidewinder were to produce a reliable and effective missile with the “electronic complexity of a table model radio and the mechanical complexity of a washing machine.”

One of my major professors, before he took to teaching physics, worked at China Lake developing IR sensors including the Sidewinder’s.

    They did good work, no?
