I’m searching for a word, but can’t quite summon it up. I think it has something to do with George Orwell’s book 1984, when an inconvenient truth is “disappeared” from the text books and newspapers. Made to vanish. Like it maybe never happened.
Anybody can help me out here?
Oh – it might be helpful if I show you what kicked off this train of thought.
This (a touched up photograph) is from the Huffington Post’s very liberal Jane Hamsher, who also blogs at Firedoglake, and who also is dogging Senator Lieberman around the campaign trail in Connecticut. This image appeared in her column, and was shown briefly on the Drudge Report, then suddenly disappeared. Comments about it, too. It’s like it never happened. We have a call into Arianna to comment on it, and as of yet, have not gotten a call back.
A US senator. In blackface. Because Ms. Hamsher just cares so much more than you do, gentle reader. You bastard.
Update: Oh, oh. Looks like this gaffe has exploded out of the pajamasphere and attracted the All Seeing Eye. Netroots, baby!
Update 2: Rats. First link fixed too.
Update 3: No it isn’t. And it pugnaciously refuses to fix, too. Try this: http://www.radioblogger.com/#001782
Update 4: I really should leave this to my betters. Jeff G. has 9 reasons why it’s probably OK to blackface Joe Lieberman. While Michelle Malkin reminds us that this isn’t a new tactic for some folks. I think some folks are just a little too ready for that whole two-minutes hate thing.

The hypocrisy of people like Hamscher and her ilk surprisingly never cease to amaze me.
Are you refering to how the Photo
“Vanished down the memory hole”?
Maybe lady Jane thought it was okay since it was posed with the “first black president”…
I believe the term you’re looking for is “down the memory hole”.

Just so, thanks.
How’s about a blackbag Liquid-PlumberGate job?
This campaign is getting dirtier and dirtier, and it’s all coming from Lamont’s camp. I live in CT and the ads Lamont is putting out are just down in the muck and mire, and going deeper all the time. It gets more and more heated everyday. I had said a while ago that in the “land of steady habits” Lieberman wouldn’t lose the primary. Based on the Lamont train running over everything in it’s path, I’m not so sure about that.
Even Lieberman has said that if he loses the primary, he’ll run as an independent. THAT didn’t go over well with registered Democrats who see that as further turning his back on the party.
CT and watchable politicking – whodathunkit…
The word “expunged” comes close … as though it never existed … but lacks the literary oomph I think you are seeking.
Wait a minute…. 1984 was a BOOK??? I thought it was an ad for MACs…

I ain’t all that bright.
Kris,
More than once you’ve called CT the
“land of steady habits.” I’ve lived here
practically all my life without hearing
that phrase from anyone else. Where’d
you encounter it?
Dave
Dave – I’ve heard it several times from friends and co-workers who have also lived here all their lives. Never thought to ask where it came from cuz it really does make sense. I’m thinking maybe it’s a Mark Twain-ism? Certainly sounds like something he’d have said…
Among a sadly large number of our population, the 2 minutes hate has become a 24/7/365 affair, where things like this don’t even measure as a pebble on the freeway.
What I find so interesting is that the same people who are always crying racist and fascist and other pejorative terms at people who disagree with them about anything, are always the first ones to display these behaviours (through things like the Lieberman black-face ad, or the homosexual photoshoppings of him, or the virulent anti-Semitic remarks they post on their sites, the list goes on); I think maybe it’s because this is how they really think? Maybe because they’re so used to labelling and one-dimensional thinking, that this is how they view things? Sick and sad…
