Thanks for sharing this, Lex. And Godspeed, Zane, if you're reading this, which I suspect you are.

OT and appropos of nothing, a reader dropped this on me, and I thought I'd share it: Reasons for Optimism. Good, and encouraging, stuff.

Lex, thanks for this post. It initiated a most interesting and gratifying walk down memory lane for me. Phil's comment, the weather and all, led to Port Hueneme, which eventually led to the Seabee Museum, which led to Robert D Stetham.

The Navy has changed and much is now almost unrecognizable to this former member of the MOBs. But some things never change.

Never Forget who we are and what we are and why we fight:

This morning we had our own ceremony at 0800. On one side of the flag pole the Seabees of the 31st Seabee Readiness Group, the homeport Battalions' training staff, about 100 strong, were in formation dressed in their BDU's.

On the other, the command's civilians lined the long sidewalk of the oval drive, all standing just in front of the bollards installed post-9/11 to protect the headquarters building. It was foggy, as though the sun decided to stay hidden as a mark of somber respect.

At "Attention," the officers in charge of the companies rendered hand salutes for their formation. Civilians crossed their hearts during the National Anthem. At "carry on," a ship's bell tolled, demarking each minute of the four minutes of meditative silence. Then "Taps" played. The C.O. gave his company commanders the command to "take charge and carry out the plan of the day," and the ceremony concluded.
