Grim Report Out of Anbar Is Disputed by General
WASHINGTON, Sept. 12 — The senior Marine commander in Iraq said Tuesday that he had sufficient forces to carry out his mission but that the mission did not include defeating the insurgency.

General Affirms Anbar Analysis
The U.S. commander in western Iraq said he agrees with the findings of a pessimistic classified report recently filed by his top intelligence officer but also insisted that “tremendous progress” is being made in that part of the country.
That’s the same general both papers are quoting, by the way. In cast that wasn’t clear.
The Dallas Morning News ran an AP story that was similar to the NYT, only their headline was “General says victory out of reach.” Which is not at all what he said, of course. Nice.
I’d make some snarky comment about Journalists, but they seem to take umbrage.
