But “Rhythms” is over 150 single-spaced, 12 pitch, typed pages. I finally went back and put them all together in Word.
So. Thanks for your endurance, all.
One hundred fifty-seven pages to be exact. I wonder how many pages that would be in “self-publish” text. And this is without carry-overs and before I add on the two epilogue chapters that no one else has seen.
Because I haven’t written them yet.
But I know just how they will be, I can feel them pushing through. It’s only a matter of sitting down and tapping them out.
You know: One of these days.

Thanks for Our endurance???
Captain,
You did this in response to the suggestion that paper copies of _Rhythms_ would make a nice incentive to contribute to Soldiers Angels.
I read every word of _Rhythms_, and will donate to the Navy camp of the Valour-IT drive regardless of whether there’s the benny of the book. But the book would be cool.
What Sid said! It goes without saying, but, “THANK YOU, Cap’n, for yours!!”
I sense the book idea is resonating … good work Nose for suggesting it.
*steps into line for his copy*

The only ‘endurance’ was waiting for further installments. You can write as much more as you want anytime and I think every one of us will be waiting to read it all. Thank you for sharing your experiences.
I had it at 189 pagesl Maybe just a different font.
No doubt, it oughtta be published as a book. Thank you for the great story.

This is right out of “Amadeus”, guys… the scene where Wolfie is asked if he’s finished a commissioned composition. He says, “Yes” and the patron says, “Well, where is it?” Then Wolfie says, “Right here.” (points to head) “The rest is just scribbling and bibbling, scribbling and bibbling.”
Cap’n
I’ll echo everything said before.
However, I will say waiting for the next installment taught this Beached Chief memorable lessons in patience. How sad none of my sailors got to experience my new found skills.
Go Team Navy! Beat (insert competition name here)!
Uh, Lex, you wouldn’t be pulling a tease on your faithful readers, would you?

Now that’s just mean, sir. That kind of suspense could be hard on a person’s heart….I mean I am sure all your readers are quite healthy … for our age (ahem) ….but we sure ain’t getting any younger! You wouldn’t be trying to keep us in suspense…nah, you’re not that kind of guy!
BTW, as been said, the endurance wasn’t ours….it was all yours. I read that puppy in two evenings and dreamt it in between
Wow Lex, that is some tease… Want to bid on Rhythms with the last two installments (not released on the net)?
That auction just might be too rich for me! Your readers could turn ugly trying to get in on that action…
They’re outstanding. You should publish them, though I would suggest finding a good publisher to do it for you. If you go the “self-publish” route you’ll wind up with a garage filled with 5-10K copies. Plus, depending on the contract, the publishing company would take care of the printing, marketing and distribution. Unless that’s something you want to pay for…?
You would need to finish writing and find a publisher with a dedicated editor (one of the hard parts) to work with you. Often times they only need a sample chapter or two to get the ball rolling.
A then-unknown Tom Clancy had HFRO first published by the Naval Institute Press. Once he became famous he jumped ship (ha!), I believe, to Putnam. Those NI Press first edition copies are very valuable now.
Never stop dreamin’! And keep writing.
Good point, Tom. My first thought on reading those lines was, “Yup. A real author. The only reason we have to call him amateur is because he hasn’t been paid… yet.”
Lex, I’ve said it so many times before: You have a (full-length, professionally-publishable) book in you. Don’t try to convince us otherwise.
As a long time volunteer with soldiers angels, I’d bid on Rythms. Would you also consider putting up the adventures of your Marine compatriot as a second auction item?
I’d love to have a copy of both.
Babs, that’s what’s worrying me, I would never be able to afford it……
~ heavy sigh, walks away, head down ~
Capt;
I have an idea for “blogvels”….I’ll share it via your contact form this weekend….I think we could have a group novel. using Rythyms as a foundation. Sgt B spilt the beans last spring…and it got me thinking…and SJS seems to be open.
150 pages? That’s a great book….remember in 5×8, it’s lots more pages!
Capt: can you also get me a good email to keep you infoed on the Navy Valour-IT? Some great things popping over there and you may be able to toss a littel wisdom into the kitty.
Get writing, Skipper… Lest some hot shot Marine AV-8 driver sneak up and pull a fast one while ye’re tippity-tapping away…
*grin*
Lex, If you write it, we will be there … reading it … In any form you present it to us!
What they said.
Oh, and I’ll pay money for a copy, though I’ve already read it free-fer-nuthin. Nice to have a professionally printed and bound paper copy in hand, in case of power failure, or something.
Wow, another two chapters???
That’s wonderful news. I knew there was a reason I hadn’t printed it all out and bound it up yet!
Take your time Lex. Art can’t be rushed.
Art may not be rushed, but money needs to be. Team Navy, what’s going on with you?
It’s gettin’ t’ be embarrassing, I tell ya!
“Rhythms”
Review and Testimonial…
“I’m a pilot. Not a Naval Aviator, jusy an ordinary pilot. CPL/ASMEL/IR.
I’ve read Ward Carroll’s books. I’ve read ‘Air Warriors’ and ‘Bogeys & Bandits’.
I enjoyed all these books but I’ve also read every word of “Rhythms”. Twice.
When I read “Rhythms” my hands sweat. They sweat more than the first time I got to MDA on an approach at night. In the snow. And saw nothing.”

Lex,
Please consider a ‘real’ book instead of one of the self-published ones. I would also recommend that you read Miss Snark (http://misssnark.blogspot.com) for guidance on selecting an agent. The agent will then sell your book to the publishers and I will buy a copy and we will all be happy.

Lex, John Ringo went from being a sci-fi reader 5 years ago to best selling author with 25 books already to his credit. In large part, this happened because of situation similar to yours, at the Baens Bar forum, where he posted up some bits and pieces and grew a fan base…who relentlessy campaigned bookstores to carry his books. The rest, as they say, was literary history
I agree that Rhythms should be a book. One possibility is Lulu (http://www.lulu.com). I have purchased someone else’s blog/book. The product looks just like a standard paperback, you can’t tell the difference. It would probably be easier than kinko’s.
The NYTimes just had a story the print on demand publishing industry, might be worth a look. (http://tinyurl.com/u3m7z)
