It’ll be better after tomorrow, one way or t’other. Right now we’re all tied up in hyper-partisan Rorchach tests. Like this one from Andrew Sullivan.
It’s all about rape and race from Andrew’s point of view, but I have to admit that for me, that’s a bit of a stretch. I don’t quite get it myself – the flyer that is, where they were going with it.
Dem ol’ debbil Democrats looking for to take away our family values. Does that sell in the Empire State?
But neither do I see all of the ugliness that Andrew jumps in on, both feet first. The subject looks like she’s been muzzled, but she hasn’t got that melting eye-liner look that comes with true terror. Nice contacts, by the way. Reminiscent of that Afghan girl back in the day. She didn’t need a hand to cover her face though – the burkha came in handy when the camera man wasn’t around. Which I suppose is neither here nor there.
But Andrew says it’s all tied up in race somehow, up there in New York state. And I guess if you look realy hard, the hand is maybe a half a shade darker than the “victim’s” face. If you’re predisposed to see the world that way. And if your world view is inextricably linked to sexuality, then I guess it’s a rape fright mask too. Sullivan says:
I just found out nothing about Democratic values. But I learned a hell of a lot more about Republican ones.
Well. OK. I guess. But I think I learned a bit more about Andrew Sullivan. Some folks look at the ink blot and see an ink blot. Some see dark-skinned rapists. Who’s to judge?
He’s not alone of course, there’s this from “Shakespeare’s Sister“:
(W)hile I pity anyone so deeply dim-witted as to react in any way to this flyer aside from laughing bitterly and tossing it in the rubbish heap, I pity the rest of us even more, whose future is predicated on convincing the imbeciles whose lizard brains respond to this shit to vote against the people most likely to have earned their alliance by virtue of regularly exploiting their ignorance.
Which that’s just got to be missing a period, or a comma, or something.
Let’s just all take a deep breath. It’ll be over tomorrow.
One way or t’other.

Take a look at the comments at the original source. More people see it Andrew and Shakespeare’s way than not.

Vote — But Don’t Forget Valour-IT
So — go vote today, let the blogsphere/media hyper-focus on every jot/tittle/nuance of this micro-trend or that and await the divisions of lawyers to be deployed in the expected post-election challenges.
Because on Nov 12th there still will be a Marine in Balboa missing a hand;
A Soldier in Brooke Army Hospital with an amputated arm;
A Sailor in Bethesda suffering partial paralysis and an Airman in Walter Reed missing both hands…
You see, the sound and fury of the electoral tide’s partisanship rises and falls — it smashs with fury on the shore one day and the next, is quiet; yet the needs of our wounded remain.
So by all means, go — vote, exercise that precious right and duty. Discuss the results, hail the victories and mourn the losses;
Just don’t forget our troops — Project Valour IT rolls on and your contribution is needed.

Huh?!
I must be missing something. I never would have taken that as a reference to rape, let alone race. In fact I would have thought it was saying that if the you vote for the Dems you will be muzzled, you won’t be able to express your opinions and values, or at least you might as well be muzzled, cuz it won’t do you no good to express them. Something like that.
Silly part to me is, looks like something either party could have put out, just change the name. Something each would say about the other.
BTW came across a silly little eight question political survey, answer these vague questions and they tell you whether you are conservative, liberal, libertarian, statist or centrist. Goofy little thing but interesting in that the vast majority of respondents apparently ended up as either centrist or libertarian. Tight race between the two, with libertarian winning by a small margin. Thought it was interesting, all this focus on left and right and yet I think it around only a total of 16% of the respondents fit in one of those two camps.
While it wouldn’t surprise me if the flyer in question was produced by (clumsy, amateurish) Republicans, I would be equally unsurprised if it came from the (unscrupulous, unhinged) other side. What’s to stop anyone from putting the NY GOP address on a bulk mailing?
“What?
“What’s to stop anyone from putting the NY GOP address on a bulk mailing?”
Nothing really, but the time and money invested to get, maybe, a few more angry votes for the other side, I doubt it’s worth the effort. At this late in the game don’t you think a lot people have their minds made up?
They’re just doing whatever it takes to shock their constituents into voting their way.
And, while I don’t see her as a victim of rape or assault (at least not yet), it sure doesn’t look like she’s enjoying herself.

NY GOP? I didn’t think they had one. Learn something every day…
Have y’all seen Whittle’s new diatribe? Pretty dang good.

The fastest way to get me to ignore the latter part of a sentence is to start it with Andrew Sullivan/Oprah/Dr. Phil says…
b2- Whittle’s piece was outstanding- thanks for the lead.
As for Shakespear’s (illegitimate?)Sister comments, sorta reminds me of the same level of condesension and snobbery, only less polite, of our education and intellectual abilities as framed by the junior senator from Mass. She must have an Ivy league edgemacation too.
