"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier
"Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas
"Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex
Read it last night and loved it! Wish I knew folks who would bother to read it, would send the link on to people other than my family. We’re all consummate readers, so we love his stuff.
Re; The Whittle’s “Polaris Sub”: I bought a “Stopwatch” from one of those ads. It was good for a minute at a time, and was made from the cheapest plastic. Not useful for timing anything other than an egg. I was disappointed, yet not swayed.
I was saving up for the x-ray glasses… That would be sooo cool!
Hate to admit it but I remember that Polaris sub and thought it was pretty cool. dc, I remember the x-ray glasses too. Back in ’65 just the thought of some boy with those sent those elementary school girls screaming to the bus driver on the way to school. Hey, Barbara! Do you remember that on the way to Wiesbaden? Heh.
Well, in the wake of the elections, I figure I’ll comment on the Eject cubed posting.
Yes, Bush is intelligent. You can’t be stupid and fly a modern jet fighter. Yes, his real problem is that he’s not articulate, which is not necessary to be intelligent.
Unfortunately, it is necessary to be articulate to be a leader. Maybe not in the military, at least at the lower levels. But it is desperately necessary to be articulate to be a political leader. When the boys start coming home in body bags, you better be able to explain why, in a moving and convincing manner, and be able to prepare the country for more. Especially when your opponents are extremely articulate. Especially in this day and age of TV and the Internet. Especially when you’re facing an electorate that is more interested in being entertained than being informed.
