But they support the troops! The San Francisco school board voted yesterday to withdraw support from local school Junior ROTC programs, effectively killing them:
JROTC is a voluntary program of course, no one is compelled to partipate. So from a certain point of view it makes perfect sense to close it down, despite the fact that it brought in matching federal funds and helped to give city kids who chose to participate life skills, self-respect, leadership lessons and a safe place to be after school – for some of them, the only safe place they knew. Because after all, this decision was made by the kind of preening, morally supercillious, smugly self-satisfied pinch-faced shrews who are convinced that nothing should be permissible unless it is compulsory. But wait, I’ve lost perspective. The really important thing here, as one program critic was quoted to say, was containing the military:
Because the all-volunteer US military – routinely one of the country’s most respected institutions – is in danger of breaking out all over the place, apparently. Dedicated – resolved even – to the notion of ruining civilian institutions. High schools. Universities. We’ll be after your opera houses next, you don’t watch out. If only we weren’t so busy trying to fight and win the nation’s wars, there’s no telling what we’d do next. By the way, I wonder how the San Francisco school board would stack up in one of those “most respected institution” surveys? These people aren’t even useful idiots and their notions are as drearily predictable as they are morally obtuse: No more soldiers, no more wars! Get it? Which is true, actually. But after the barbarians – and there are always barbarians – have finally slit enough throats, the rest of us will have to give up every privilege that we’ve come to consider as rights. We had that luxury, as well as the privilege of taking stylized positions inside our protected citadels, because somewhere on the outer rim good men and women are even now sacrficing a portion of their own freedoms in defense of ours. Suckers. 31 comments to But they support the troops! |

Lex,
You forgot the “f” in the last word on this post….
aaarrrggghhh!!!!! (pounds head on table)
Let’s see:
- a program that brings in federal $$’s for the school system.
- a program that provides kids with opportunities that they probably would otherwise not have.
- a program that promotes good behavior and respect for authority (probably that doesn’t go down well with the left-over flower kids out there).
Yup, we’d better put a stop to that program right away. Strike a blow for democracy and all that…
You said it Lex – those people don’t even qualify as useful idiots!
Just when you think people can’t sink any lower, they do.
Idiots – shameful idiots.
Would you not be more surprised if JROTC were allowed by the SF School Board?
There are two hotbeds of this “Not-in-My-School” lunacy: Frisco, that whines about almost anything related to the “evil” military; and Santa Cruz, that dittos the above.
Despite the lunacy, Fleet Week – SF draws hundreds of kilo-guests, some of which reside in that city.
Mayor Newsome was aboard Nimitz for the Parade of Ships ride into port, with his significant squeeze. He flew off in an H-60 just before he could get the results of the anchor pool. I suspect the Mayor is not **that** opposed to the Navy, after all.
Also, Navy Recruiting District San Francisco has been over-quota for years. Don’t tell anyone, but the area is a ripe picking ground for qualified enlisted and officer recruits.
One other item: to the south of SF lies liberal San Jose with almost a million citizens. We just elected a **conservative”** Democrat leaning mayor that was a graduate of the Air Force Academy, and a daughter that is a Warthog driver extraodinaire. Mayor-elect Reed soundly trounced an Al Gore eco-mantra reciting female of Hispanic origin.
Getting it all into a sentence: the pendulum swings and it’s headded back to center arc. I hope to live long enough to see it go all the way.
SJBill
Shipmates,
Well, there’s actually a simple response to these actions. Complete compliance with their wishes. No military recruiters on campus? No JROTC? No ROTC? Fine and dandy.
SecDef… Generate orders to remove all military forces and supporting units from within the city limits effective within 90 days. Designate the city as “Off-Limits” to any and all military personell. Remove any and all businesses and individuals residing and/or working within the city limits as “non-acceptance” for bidding on any and all DoD contracts and programs.
To the Governor of (fill in the blank). According to the desires of the elected officials of (such & such) no military personell and/or programs are to be active within their jurisdictional limits. Therefor, in any event of a declared emergency, your National Guard unit(s) will be Federalised, and prohibited from responding to any and all calls for assistance from within said area.
Active duty personell whose homes of record are within the jurisdiction(s) named are hereby required to acquire a post box or other such address whereby official mail may be delivered.
Retired military who reside within the said jurisdiction will be required to obtain other means for delivery of official documents and notifications, as any and all mail eminating from any DoD organisation will no longer be deliverable to within said jurisdiction.
Etc. Etc. Etc.
Ya know, the Romans, as cunning and crafty as they were, eventually found themselves looking down their collective noses at the Legions. They sh*t on them over and over again until one day the Legions got tired of it and returned to Rome for a visit. It wasn’t pretty.
Later on, a similar situation occured on the frontier. Out of touch Roman Emperors and Citizens became jaded of their military, and the military got tired of keeping the barbarians out. Next thing you know, there are Vandals strolling down the Via Appia, milling about the Forum, and pretty much doing as they please, and the Legions are nowhere to be seen.
Not that I’m advocating thre military would DO such a thing here in the states, you know…. just ruminating a bit…..
Rat Bastards
Ya know, those SF folks are the kind that give buggery a bad name.
Respects,
As a former JROTC cadet from the early Reagan years I can say that even back in that era less than 10% of the students went on to a military career. Of those half left the military after their first tour, the others stayed, some to Lt Col.
I think JROTC teaches the true values of patriotism and pride in yourself for those middle range of kids who won’t make it to the footabll team or speech team. JROTC teaches citizenship, because the cadets learn what it takes so at least they can better appreciate those who do choose to serve. Just my 2 cents.
Un-useful Idiots…
Lex concludes a withering assessment of people who have shown themselves stupid beyond description with the following lines:These people aren?
Well folks, Civil Air Patrol is always looking for a few good young men and women….
http://www.cap.gov/visitors/quick_info/for_parents.cfm
If SF doesn’t want to Invest In America’s Youth, that’s fine.
We will.
Bay area folks were offended by the prospect of having their own Battleship as well.
PLEASE, NEVER OFFEND THEM AGAIN! DOD should not spend another dime in this cesspool of degeneracy and lunacy. And, DOD should PROMSE to NEVER come to help their sorry butts for any reason. Ever!
Congress needs to pass legislation prohibiting ANY federal funds being sent to ANY school district that does not permit JROTC units. Ditto use of fedrally provided equipment for use within any government entity as hostile to the military as this. Let them get their own M16s, vehicles, comm gear, MREs, etc, if the state wants to send the National Guard in.
Bugger the bunch who passed this stupid measure, but they can do that without our help.

AW1 Tim spoke thusly:
AW1 Tim spoke thusly:
SJ Bill said: That was NAS Alameda, Mare Island NSY, San Francisco Naval Shipyard at Hunters Point… I?
Follow on to SJBill;
I returned yesterday, from visiting my family in the Bay Area. Took my nephew to visit NAS Alameda. We visited the Hornet (Must see, for anyone interested in our Navy heritage!) The Docent’s are great fun, and they have done a wonderful job of making the ship a safe and fun place to visit.
The base is in a shambles. The barracks are not in use and are probably not safe. What about that so-called homeless problem? There must be sleeping area for a thousand people. Might be cheaper to operate than the various shelters around town. (Added bonus: Keeps pan handlers away from downtown businesses!)
The off base housing was torn down and trendy condos went in their place.
It is a shame we lost a deep water carrier port. Even more of a shame to let the infrastructure go away. Maybe Trump can buy “Point Alameda” and put in a Megacasino and resort. The Bay Area deserves it.
Time to stop the Fleet Week nonsense, and quit licking the hands of the leftist politicians.
Not long after the “War of Northern Aggression” (okay maybe a little more recently) I attended Lowell H.S. in San Francisco; where I was a member of the JROTC program. A very few of my peers went on to the “trade schools” (USMA/USNA/USAFA) but many more went on to places like UC Berkeley, where they acquired the tools to become physicians, researchers, captains of industry or educators. What San Francisco’s School Board has done is demonstrated, once again, that “the City” and its politics, is irrelevent and out of touch with much of America.
I would suggest that the “hundreds of kilo-guests” cited by SJBill as having enjoyed Navy hospitality during Fleet Week, return that hospitality at the polls and by “letters to the editors.” Oh, and I do hope that the good mayor and his “squeeze” enjoyed their helo ride.
I am certain that the next time the city shakes & burns, as it surely will, the cry for military assitance will surpass that of Louisiana in volume and desperation – and the military will respond with all of capabilities, even though it’s very existence is viewed as grotesque and repugnant by many of San Francisco’s residents.
I will no longer boycott just the San Francisco Hilton Hotel, my boycott will now extend to the entire city. I may have, “..left my heart in San Francisco,” but not one penny of my earnings.
AW1 Tim & Bomber Guy: hope you both don’t mind if I lift a large portion of your comments and send them to the City of SF. I live in New England and I’ve never visited SF (don’t plan to now, that’s for sure) but this decision of theirs should reverberate throughout the entire country – I intend to show them that it has.
If anyone is interested in sending letters, here are a few e-mail addresses:
—Mayor: gavin.newsom@sfgov.org
—Board of Supervisors: board.of.supervisors@sfgov.org
—Exec Assistant to the Board of Ed: ecasco@muse.sfusd.edu
Well, then, this article —-> http://www.nmfa.org/site/PageServer?pagename=Government_and_you_Enews20061115#4 (read #4) makes even MORE sense now.
I like the idea of pulling any and all military entitites out of the SF area. Works for me.
Idiots.
Kris in NE,
Feel free to use any of my remarks; and thanks for the email addresses of the various public officials. For the record, the “San Francisco Chronicle” and the mayor opposed ending the program.
This has been a wake-up call of sorts for many of us, who historically have not spent a lot of time researching political candidates who seek election to seemingly minor positions. We need to remember that a single cell can lead to incurable cancer.
With my disposible income that I will not be spending in San Francisco in mind, when does the snow melt in New England?
I’d say something, but Twain said it better and first –
“In the first place, God made idiots. That was for practice.
Then he made school boards.”
A brave dissenter has commented over at my excerpt of this rather than here where he might have to actually answer the intelligent and well-informed posters here. Anybody here care to welcome him?

Lex – we already got the Opera Houses…
“I am the very model of a modern Major-General!
I’ve information vegetable, animal, and mineral!
I know the kings of England, and I quote the fights historical,
From Marathon to Waterloo, in order categorical!”
Courtesy of Gilbert and Sullivan…
Sorry FbL, but the man’s not welcome here. Just a hater, and I’ve got no time and less patience for his sort of little hyperventilated dramas.
You can’t help some people.
Sorry, Lex. I was rushing out the door when I saw his comment. I was struck by how he chose to attack the person who linked rather than the original author and I guess I was just trying to highlight that. Now that I’ve had some time to actually think, I realize that was probably not well done of me.
I didn’t see what he wrote here… hope it wasn’t too awful. Sorry.
Well, they can all go get some character training across the bay in Oakland. The City By The Bay has finally gone bye bye.
It’s all gone there. But I will remember different times…
Leaving for 6-8 month Westpac cruises and 30 day workups past Treasure I. and the Golden Gate Bridge into the roughest seas on earth, riding the BART into SF for Chinese food at 0200, moving all the troops on C-9’s back/forth to Alameda, taking off from ALameda into the N.W. past the city while the sun went down, staying at the St. Francis with my future wife and riding cable cars to/from 4 star restaurants, driving up (or was it down-LOL) Lombard St. the wrong way for S & G, etc.-etc.
All lost to the moonbat left..Someday we’ll have to retake it bomber guy!

This decision frustrated the heck out of me. Without MCJROTC, I firmly belive that my son would have been a HS dropout instead of Cadet Major and cadet of the year. He was one of those who did go one to active duty after graduation and had his first promotion at the end of boot camp courtesy of those four years of JROTC participation.
I think the SF school board is horribly short sighted to cut a program that does so much good. But then, they don’t much like the Boy/Girl Scouts either *sigh*.
**sigh** what has happened to California?
Actually, you know what sir, some of my best classmates for sure are from California, and specifcally northern California. Real good guys, but of course you never hear of them, which may or may not be fortunate. On one hand, hopefully this only makes the press because they know it will rile people up (hopefully against this school board), whereas the short paragraph on one brother completing plebe summer in my company and the other completing OCS first in his company is just ordinary, something that won’t get people riled up.
There’s no question Dan that the Bay area has both a proud tradition of supporting the troops, and folks who still do. It’s some of the elected officials there that feel empowered to say provocative things as a form of street theater that give me the piles.
They’ve a right to make fools of themselves. I’ve a right to call them on it.
[...] from the presence of the military would be such a bunch of asshats.?Ǭ
