Targets of Opportunityblog advertising is good for you Credo"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones "Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra" "And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche "A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke “You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier "Μολὼν λαβέ" -- Leonidas "Blogito Ergo Sum" -- Neptunus Lex Amazon AssociateFor the Effort!Winnar!![]() Subscribe![]() CategoriesPagesTagsacademy

Odd that you mention that… After about two years of prodding from various friends, I just sat down and watched the mini-series tonight. Needless to say, in about two weeks I will be up to speed, and will be able to comment on the “unexpected direction” that you mentioned.
Sometimes you just gotta let the nerd come on out.
BSG rocks. Best. Damn. Show. On. TV.
At least now I know why Starbuck and Apollo were at each other’s throats…
B
Yes I do, Sir.
And it?Ǭ
Yes I do, Sir.
And it´s a pleasure, for once, to see real bullets, instead of laser beams and light balls.
I miss the old series, especially the Cylons’ metallic “By Yore Kommand” voices. Hokey but expected for SciFi.
Ah life, and most of us, were simpler in 1978 –weren’t we?
I agree with KP in #1 above – you HAVE to give the inner nerd a chance to see the light sometimes.
I’ve never watched the current BSG, but I am a die-hard Star Trek fan..FWIW.
I too hate to admit that I did see it. Too weird not seeing Dirk Benedict as Starbuck but Sci-Fi channel has done an awesome job with the series.
I’m not caught up on the series and I’m thinking about buying the previous seasons on DVD…
You mean BSG “raging bull” episode?
Use to love the old BSG. Of course, it might have helped that I was pretty well a kid and had a major crush on Dirk Bennedict.
But I was pretty sci fi crazy back then, even had a subscription to Isaac Asimov’s sci fi magazine. And the old Star Trek series – my brother loved it so we all had to watch it, or nothing at all. Ended up getting into that too pretty much.
So this new BSG – how does it compare?
And Bryan, don’t leave me hanging, please enlighten about Starbuck’s and Apollos’s relationship?
I started watching Friday’s episode about 15 minutes in and I was hooked. Never seen an episode before and it was quite, uh, compelling.
Dirk Benedict can go away. Far away. Who’s the girl playing Starbuck? Wow. Just wow.
Then I watched the first few minutes of Dr. Who. Looks like their production budget has increased in the past few incarnations. An episode YEARS ago showed a “laser beam” cutting into a wall and you could see the X-Acto knife blade cutting the material.
At least they ditched the King tut get ups and capes……
So Michelle – do you agree that “Deep Space Nine” was an affront to the very nature of Star Trek??? I’m partial to “Next Generation”, but that could have as much to do with Patrick Stewart and Jonathan Frakes as Star Trek itself.
And oh yeah, I’m with you on Dirk Benedict. But Richard Hatch wasn’t so bad either…Ah those were the days.
Kris, I never could really get into any of those “also rans”, kind of saw them as Star Trek wanna-bes, I guess. I tried watching Next Generation for a while, it was okay, kind of, sort of…. but really just didn’t cut it for me. I noticed that a lot of people are partial to Patrick Stewart though …. nah, not my type.
But you’re right, there weren’t nothing wrong with Richard Hatch either, wouldn’t kick either one of them out of bed for cracker crumbs, as they say. But for me, Dirk had the edge, oh that smile to die for! Use to argue that point out a lot with my friends. Wonder what ever happened to those two…….and how well they aged…..hmmmm…..
And here Lex though this was going to be a dedicated nerd thread…. if we get a few more of the fairer sex weighing in here, hard to say where this one might go!
It’s cold shower time for the LEX-BABES. Best
Hey Lex, back in May I came out of the closet. BSG is the best military show on TV. Not just SCI/FI.
When you are running against JAG…..
Michelle:
Richard Hatch in 2004: http://www.imdb.com/gallery/ss/0407362/Ss/0407362/BSG04_04_107CSRF_LowRes.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Hatch,%20Richard%20(I)
Dirk Benedict (date unknown):

Both of them look pretty good for 61 years old. Yup – they were both born in 1945. Eek!
Great show the other night.
Like others I wondered where that one was taking us. Adama’s speech was very good. Sets the tone for the future comamnd climate.
And I always said it was Starbuck with and F.
Oh, BTW, on the Original BSG the Colonial Viper Pilot collar insiginia was US Army officers’ Military Intelligence Branch insiginia worn inverted.
Thanks Kris, should have known I could count on you to have my six
But ummmm really like……….61??!! Now that’s just scary!!
Oh well, thank goodnes I ain’t THAT old … with no offence meant to anyone present who might be of that vintage. But Eek is right, even double Eek maybe.
Still though, what can I say, breeding does show, Dirk is still the better looking of the two. But I guess I will have to stick with my memories of two much youger “flying space aces” as Dirk’s site calls it. Hmmm…. flying space aces…..fighter pilots….. kind of seeing a theme here. What do ya think?
The current BSG ranks up there with the best television has to offer in any genre. The responses and behaviors of the actors/roles give it a sense of reality within the sci-fi premise. The fight between Starbuck and the CAG was a twist, but I can see it. There are attractions present in mixed crews that are going to find an outlet.
Hmmm…I wonder Michelle, if you aren’t onto something here. Flyboys and fighter pilots – seems like the BSG-boys are in good company with our fair Cap’n.
And with all due respect to our esteemed host and his minions, I hereby present the Hottest. Space Ace. Ever.

Love the show and think the writing has some of the best plot development on T.V. I thought the twist between Starbuck and Apollo was nice. Their attraction was transparent, but never thought it would be carried through to that end. Nor did I think they would have a flashback episode filling in the blanks about the sexual tension. Does that count as domestic violence?? LOL
Oh yeah, you can’t top the best! And all in good company here
It’s amazingly well filmed and the attention to detail is really cool. I remember seeing one scene where the colonial vipers and raptors bug out away from a horde of cylon raiders – one of the raiders passes close aboard the camera “filming” the colonial retreat, jostling it as it goes by. I had the simultaneous thoughts of “that wouldn’t happen” because of course, there’s no medium in space to conduct the energy wave before thinking, “That was really cool, that’s sort of how it feels when you get thumped from behind.”
I also like the background music, astonishingly and un-selfconsciously acted – Olmos’ Admiral Adama is amazing and there are many authentic-feeling personnel interactions.
Kara Thrace is psychologically complex, emotionally high-maintenance, and kinda purdy in a wrassle ‘em down, take what they’ve got to give and then kick ‘em in the pants to get ‘em out of the rack kind of a way. I think her man Anders is probably lucky to be shot of her, if in fact that’s what happens.
So yeah, I like it. There are two or three shows I try not to miss on a weekly basis. I can’t remember what the others are. BSG tops the list.
Lex, that’s one of the best descriptions of Starbuck that I’ve read.
Of course, the really critical question raised by the ep — back in that flashback, did Bill and Laura do it, or what?
I’ve not missed a BSG episode yet, and Unfinished Business is right up there with my favourites – hats off to the writers who made a character piece ‘filler’ episode so riveting and insightful. And not a Cylon in sight.
My favourite moments were:
Adama and Roslin getting ‘stoned’ under the stars together!;
Chief Tyrol being woken up by the old man in the ring and going off to fix his ship;
Seeing how hard it must be to be Kara Thrace with so much self-hatred you can’t sustain any sort of relationship;
Poor old Dee seeing her marriage go up in flames.
Excellent episode. And Mike, I like to think that Bill and Laura did get it on. But now it’s back to Admiral and Madam President, sadly.
You guys are dorks.
Naah, just kidding. I TIVO every episode.
It’s good to see that in the future (or is it the past) that the Navy gets put in charge of spaceships. (Air Force was probably responsible for Air Defense back on Caprica.)
N
BSG is good, though I had my doubts when it first aired (would it be considered too “dark” for mainstream audiences), but then again, I am also a confirmed Babylon 5 fan (and Firefly)…, hmm I guess I’m saying I like dark scifi…
- SJS
A contrarian thought, Re BSG… Nose, could have ended his comments (#25 above)and rested his case on a high note right after he said, “You guys are dorks”. Instead he choose the popular course and joined the hallelujah chorus in praise for this perposterous, over the top, confusing, darkly lit (to hide the poor production values),heavy breathing, breast thumping, muddled si-fi soap opera of a mess…and along the way, for good measure managed to pimp the Navy and snark the Zoomies… a truly wonderous example of mental onanism. My congratulations… Best
