That’s an interesting close their on the President’s looming conflict with elements in Congress opposed to surging forces. Teddy Roosevelt faced a similar kind of power struggle when he sent the “Great White Fleet” around the world and majorities in Congress, fearing that the whole adventure was more of an expensive Great White Elephant, voted to deny him the funds.

Roosevelt replied that he already had the funds to send the Fleet overseas – it would be up to Congress whether or not to vote the funds to bring them home.

Just heard this story recounted the other day on NPR…

The way I heard it, TR wanted to send the whole Fleet around the world.

Congress said no, send half the Fleet the whole way, and here’s the money to do so.

TR went ahead and sent the whole fleet half-way and then asked Congress if they’d like to bring the Fleet home or leave it on the other side of the world.

I laughed out loud when I heard that story. The man had style.

  • You know what I’d like to see? I’d like to see that level of accusatory, probing questioning (bordering on hostile) directed at Harry Reid, John Murtha, Sandy Burger, William “I’m two-thirds Clinton” Jefferson, and the rest of that crowd of borderline (and I’m being generous here by calling it ‘borderline’) criminals.
