FbL tagged me with one of those blogging memes – you know, the ones that cause you to abandon all your principles and write revealing things about yourself that you’d probably rather keep private or else you’d have written about them already. Six “weird” things about yourself.
That kind of thing.
So. Ok. Here goes:
1. I’m strangely drawn to this video of Tori Amos singing the song entitled “God” from her album Under the Pink. Strangely because I share very little of my religious philosophy with Amos – who by the way was a preacher’s daughter – and, according to wikipedia:
The song was Amos’ response to patriarchy and the repression of women through religion. Lyrically it was heavily confrontational of male-deity headed religions, with lyrics like “God, sometimes you just don’t come through/do you need a woman to look after you?” American radio was very hesitant to play the song because of it’s heavy use of guitars, so a promotional CD was released in the USA with two commercially unavailable mixes of the song: the “No Guitar” mix and the “Some Guitar” mix.
Which I don’t know about all that repression and patriarchy grease, but I can see how the US market might object to the “heavy use of guitars.”‘Cos we just don’t do that sort of thing around here.
For God’s sake.
But you know what? Amos is a top notch vocalist who can also stroke the ivory and a redhead to boot, which combination of attributes, taken as a whole, has the propensity to leave your correspondent sawing on the reins. Road not taken, and all that.
2. I think it’d be kind of cool to own a gladius. Hang it up against the wall.
3. A katana too.
4. And some armor.
5. Yeah, I’ve got kind of a thing for edged weapons. It’s a fencer thing. You mightn’t understand.
6. And here’s the weirdest thing: So far asI can tell? There aren’t six weird things about me. That I’m aware of. Or willing to, you know: Share. With you. Publicly.
The internets are forever!
And my choices as tag-ee’s? Nada. Nix. Nuttin’.
End of the line, dad.

Liking swords isn’t wierd, and I haven’t fenced since high school.
Though I’d prefer something a little more endowed than a gladius.
Tori Amos is indeed amazing; odd, but amazing.
“…Or willing to, you know: Share. With you. Publicly.”
Chicken. And who says the rest has to do with fencing – that gladius is pretty cool.
You know what’s really weird?: that you think anything truly weird about you would be too revelatory.
Well, I suppose when you have to maintain that facade as paragon of all that is Right and Good, it can be… difficult. The strain of command and all that…
Of course, that just leaves us all to wonder… *evil grin*
Lex, the vid…you can’t be serious. Both the lyrics and the images are just too, tooo disgusting!I kept expecting Ravi Schankar to pop up and grin. The gal is a sweet looking thing. The only thing she’s missing are horns and a pitch fork.
The swords are an acquired taste.I like a WW1 bayonet…too long to be a knife, too short to be a sword, just right for…I da know, just right.
Could care less about Ms Amos, since I haven’t heard much music worth me listening to since the ‘70a (yes, I’m a dinosaur).
Would rather have the katana. Katana is a stand alone weapon, strong enough to parry, long enough to kill. The gladius was meant to be used with the shield, stabbing at the legs and stomachs of their enemies, whilst the pikes held them off.
And the six things business? You don’t need six things….all you need is “Honor”. You got that, you got what it takes to get it done right.
The vid is interesting, and Tori is a cutie, to be sure. I’ve never bought any of her music, and because of this was laboring under the misconception she was singing “GOT some time; you just don’t come through…”
Ah, mondegreens!
Byron – not a dinosaur at all! My Sirius radio is tuned almost permanently to “Classic Rock”, although I like “Classic Vinyl” as well. I like to listen to alot of different stuff, but in the end I always go back to the Eagles, Steve Miller, Boston and early Van Halen. Can’t help myself…
My favorite edged weapons are the kukris from Khukuri House. Nothing takes aircraft aluminum apart like a kukri.
I’ve always liked Tori Amos, but this vid is a turn-off. Rats are a Merchant Marine allergy…
Lex, I like the edged weapons…that’s not weird….I’d hang them up at my place…
and get them down and hurt myself every so often .
as for armor, I want chainmail. Like in LOTR.
and Tori Amos? well….k, not my kinda music….and she’s just totally missed the whole point but God is patient……
so, either you’re not very weird (not counting Tori ) or you’re hiding it well!
Understand your attraction to edged weapons. It took a real set to go into a fight with them. Kinda fits you. I have three edged weapons- a Cav Saber my sons got me at Gettysburg for Christmas the year I took command of a tank bn, another Civil War Union Officer’s sword. No offense intende nor apologies offered, sir. (My people were in Maine regiments at the time.) I keep a recent acquistion mounted on the wall in the office in my HQ. I don’t advertise it but if one should examine it closely it has the engravings and markings identifying it as a crusader’s sword. No illusions here.Heh.
Lex
I do have some sympathy with the whole gladius/centurion bit. Though, myself, I’d prefer a good basket hilt. Wilkinson makes them, but they cost more than the car I’m driving. Oh, well.
One of my best friends (a woman) got all giddy a few years ago when her husband got her this three-pronged knife thingy, framed. They have a suit of armor in their bedroom. It’s very “goth”, but she’s not goth at all.
Weird… but normal, I suppose.
How bout:
#6 – Willingly crash landed a perfectly good airplane onto the deck of a heaving ship. In the dark. Repeatedly.
That’s pretty weird.
Well, now. Comment #14 is certainly interesting, ain’t it? Jeez Lex, it’s one thing to attract the ‘bats once in a while, but terrorists them-own-selves? I’ll be danged!
Buck, “she’s” probably some kid in Europe trying to act cool. They troll the milblogs looking to stir it up. I suspect that if Lex were to trace the IP, he’d find out where this wingnut is from…and then do the old IRC “pban” thingmie.
I don’t git none of this post (scratch-scratch). Either:
a- you compulsively watch the cutlery shows on the shopping channel
or
b- This post has something to do with that Duane-Lorraine Bobbitt stuff of a decade ago…
b2
PS- I prefer 900fps carbon tipped with 125 grain Muzzy
Ok, lemme walk you though it really slow –
Lex had said “6. And here?

Lex had said “6. And here’s the weirdest thing: So far as I can tell? There aren’t six weird things about me. ”
I was offering a sixth weird thing about himself and was referring to him being a carrier pilot for a living.
Lighten up.
