Other folks are all over the quote attributed to WaPo blogger William Arkin by Deborah Howell, the paper’s ombudsman:
Arkin is unrepentant about two things: He works for The Post. Period. And he said he is “probably one of the best-known and respected anti-military military bloggers.”
Apart from the obvious AHA! reaction, this raises a couple of interesting points: Given that the military is routinely cited as one of the country’s most respected institutions, this puts Arkin’s pride of place in a pretty cramped room. Especially when one considers all of those loyal American citizens who “support the troops, but not their mission.”
So who’s left to respect Arkin’s position? Oh. These folks.
Which seems a strange place from whence an employee of the Washington Post might look to get his affirmation. Arkin said earlier that he was done with all this. Now I am done with him.
He’s just not worth much.

Time to work up a nice mouthfull of…oh, forgot, we don’t do that. Damn.
isn’t there a basic limit to freedom of speech? when you’re inciting murder…..?
It’s a good thing I am not God…..I’d have stomped my big ol’ God-feet all over the place by now. None would have escaped.
Hey, doorkeeper, when you’re done with your stomping, I think he’ll most likely be reincarnated as one of those new “talking” urinal cakes.
Yeah, yeah, we’re a country of laws, but can’t the president declare you to be an a$$hole and ship you off to…oh, THE MOON!
clarifiation…NOT you, ARKIN
And here’s another stunner from Howell:
“An editor read his column before it was posted but didn’t see the problem.”
Whoa! I had assumed that Arkin had pretty much free reign on his blog. But apparently there’s at least one editor at the Washington Post who saw nothing wrong with Arkin’s insulting and obnoxious (and incorrect) blog posts.
Wow.
I dunno ’bout you all, but, I’m fixin’ to send our warriors some more “obscene ammenities”. It’s the only way I can cope with the damn fools walkin’ the streets and enjoying the liberties our fightin’ men and women are given ‘em. Energies spent other ways would only land me in jail for a very long time…
That banner those ‘bats are carrying doesn’t offend me as much as the fact that the yellow cowards have on face masks like Hamas/Hezbollah/Al Queda. Can’t do much about those mask wearing cowardly killers walking around over there.
Therefore, I propose a law to make it illegal to protest with one’s face covered. To do so reminds me of the Klu Kluk Klan…
Make it so.

At what point do these despicable scum cease being merely being idiots exercising their right to free speech whom we should tolerate, even if we disagree? At what point are they to be considered treasonous SOBs who have become enemies of our country?
Many of us have sworn (repeatedly) to “…support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic.” By what means may, or must, we do so? Is there a continuum of force, or as soon as it is clear that they are “enemies” are all options on the table? Their inane posturings and pronouncements are getting our troops killed by giving aid and comfort to the enemy.
Maybe like the proverbial frogs in the heated pot, we are just complacently accepting this steady escalation of internal hostility towards our troops, national intersts, and the Constitution and will never do anything. The fact that it is being pushed on the unattentive masses by the agenda driven mainstream media, and their kindred spirits in academia makes it even more serious.
When and how will it stop?
I don’t know.
I am not advocating kinetic energy solutions, just wondering what the appropriate solutions might be.
The Islamic xtremists want to kill us all, in case Arkin and WaPo have not noticed, and they are facilitating that outcome.
John S,
I agree with you almost completely with regards to the way in which the nation’s fighting forces are often found sandwiched by the enemy at home and the enemy away. I think a fundamental aspect of that discussion though is this: the group of people of which you speak, the “academic/protestor/march-in-the-street-in-masks” crowd do not believe the fundamental assesment that our enemies want us dead. They believe these people are “freedom fighters” trying to keep Haliburton out of their simple, peaceful countries as the Despotic Premier Bush tries to force the fist of capitalism down their throats. To speak with some of the people who engage in this kind of internal destruction of America, you may (or may not) be surprised to find out they believe in earnest that violence in the Middle East is fueled solely by America’s involvement, as well as our support for Israel, and that ending either one would end the whole “shebang” altogether.
Hence why they are such a dangerous and, clearly, insane constituency.
Deborah Howell’s response was a whole lot of nothing. Just another reason for me not to spend any of my hard earned $’s on that bird cage liner called the Washington Post.
So Lex..if Arkin is a “respected Anti-military military blogger” may be you should shoot for respected pro-military military blogger..and you’d certainly be a better qualified military analyst than Arkin the oxygen thief.
Here. Here.

Perfect. Let’s bring home the troops and all military support organizations and send these “peace diplomats” over to practice “diplomacy.” That would be a treat to watch! It might even convince me to tune into CNN to see how well they do. Arkin can, and should, lead the way. Oh, and I’ll be right here at home “supporting” him in exactly the way he and his ilk “support” our troops.
Umm, BadBob, that’s pretty much the way the law is and has been for years and years where I grew up. It was an anti-KKK law.
Like all laws, anti-mask laws sometimes hurt victims instead of bullies, that is, some times you use camouflage as a mouse to keep from being eaten, sometimes you use camouflage as a cat to sneak up on your food..
Oh, those people holding that sign up seem kinda food-like, to me. Not that I would eat any of ‘em.
Well justthisguy,
I see your point but I think wearing a mask while demonstarting is cowardly and reminds me of those Mujh-MFs, over THERE. Un American.
Don’t get me wrong. I often wear a camo mask when I bushwack deer from a concealed perch in a tree but that is different.
Outlawing masks ain’t the intent. Imagine the uproar that would create in the Midwest where snowmobiling is big.
On the other hand, outlawing masks while participating in a public demonstration should be.
