<a href="http://lieberman.senate.gov/newsroom/release.cfm?id=249384&&" rel="nofollow">Lieberman's 2005 WSJ Op/Ed</a>

No reasonable person can read this op/ed and not come to the conclusion Lieberman believes the current strategy is working and will lead to success. Success, that Lieberman emphasizes is already taking place.

Last week, Lieberman wrote essentially the same op/ed with the difference being the escalation is working and will lead success.

The Lieberman adherents remind me of the petshop owner in the Monty Python skit who keeps trying to convince a customer the parrot lying on the deck of the cage isn't dead.

Beautiful plumage.

Ben - actually (the way I understand it) the first couple of years were spent on trying to capture/kill bad guys and reduce pockets of resistance and the focus was on building ISF to do the "hold" part, or providing security. Speaking under correction, the only places where the US provided direct, round-the-clock security were in the Green Zone and at the various LSPs and FOBs.

Clean-hold-build worked with some success in Tal Afar in late 2005, and became a COIN blueprint for potential further successes. Problem was (is) that Baghdad is too big for the force structure currently in place, while Anbar is too far flung for the Marines in place.

Thus, the Surge.

But we weren't trying to provide security before now?

Maybe I should have been following more closely, but that seems quite discouraging regardless of how honest Lieberman is. It just strikes me that, in fighting this particular type of enemy, in this particular kind of war, providing security is among the basic tasks we faced.

That said, I hope Lieberman's right.
