Good heavens

Having successfully dodged a bullet last week by not taking criminals in, the home team is being asked to take somebody accused of a felony back:

Astronaut Lisa M. Nowak has been dismissed by NASA and will return to active duty in the Navy, officials said yesterday.

Nowak has been charged with attempted kidnapping and other felonies in connection with a late-night encounter in Florida with a woman she saw as a rival for the affections of astronaut William A. Oefelein, a Navy commander.

Navy spokeswoman Lydia Robertson said Nowak will begin her new assignment on March 21, working with the Chief of Naval Air Training in Corpus Christi, Tex. Navy officials have said they will decide whether Nowak should face military charges after her criminal case runs its course.

This is something between a soap opera and a tragedy in three-acts. Be sure and read to the end to find out one more reason why you want to be careful with what you put in an email.

Golly.

I wonder what her job is going to be at CNATRA– PAO?

  • I’m guessing she’s gonna be Lex’s replacement when he rolls out of his current job

  • “Love the **** out of you?” I wonder if that’s been edited for public consumption… I’m thinking a 4 letter word that begins with F is a more likely choice than “love”

  • Ok, my question (since I heard about this yesterday) is what do you do with an O-6 who has not been in the Navy for something like 10 years? Yeah, I can’t wait to see what that assignment will be.

Resisting an almost uncontrollable urge to mega snark… I shall restrict myself to a sole comment on this sordid and monumentally tragic tale of near gothic proportions… SWEET JESUS…that ZOOMIE- BABE is one overwrought, big haired, bra burning, HORN DOG. Best

CNATRA is probably as safe a place as any to park an O-6 with previous aeronautical aptitude and present mental ineptitude. Fly the big steel desk off in the corner while the legals do their part to iron out the particulars. Plea(s)and bargains that offers sensible resolution, hefty amount of regular therapy with a clinician, and a quiet fade into what hopefully won’t be a troubled retirement.

    Shipmates,

I’m surprised she wasn’t offered the Command of the US Naval Academy. Seems to me she has demonstrated all the appropriate skills, judging from recent actions down there…….

Or maybe at least head of their Women’s Studies department…..

    Snark…….

I snark, because between the two, I’d otherwise weep for quite sometime.

    Respects,

  • John

Weed Abatement and Sh*ttly Litte Jobs officer seem appropriate. And perhaps a guest appearance at the “How not to manage your career” seminar.

As the mother of a Marine NFO in training – I know I would NOT be thrilled to have this woman in close proximity to young, hunky, guys (as we know all you Pilots are and remain!). Who thought this was a good idea?
Sometimes you just have to wonder. . . .

  • Lex, you coulda left this alone…

But you didn’t, so I’ll wallow in it too.

ASTRONAUT LU-U-U-VVE TRIANGLE!! Snork snerk snigger giggle horselaugh hiccup.

Kind of a cautionary tale, actchally, i.e. don’t let yer obsessions run away with you, act normal in public (no conduct unbecoming), and all that.

  • P. S. e-mail is public, as Ollie North found out too late.

  • Ok, this is the last time I’ll ask this, whether or not anybody answers.

What did Captain Nowak have in mind to do with the 4 feet of rubber tubing? What was the O.D. and the I.D. of that piece of criminal apparatus?

Do y’all think I might be a weird person for asking that question?

What was she *thinking*? I mean, I shudder when I look at that mug shot, and try to imagine what her kids think about this.

And, yeah, mug shots are forever. Bill Gates looks like a doofus stoner in his, just to give an example.

Every time we try to talk about this at work, we end up laughing. It’s Commander Oefelein’s situation that is the funniest. Nowak’s life just became a tragedy, for herself, the kids, all of it.
But Oefelein’s world. Imagine what going to work, or the O Club is like, “Hey Offie! Got any dating tips for us?” “What’s it like banging a crazy chick?” “Hey lover boy, tear the clothes off anyone on the tarmac today?” and so on.We were always merciless, and he can’t hide, it’s in the newspapers, on the web.
His chances of promotion are likely hosed, too. How long will it be before they give him another shuttle mission, considering what the press will publish, “Nowak’s Lover Launches! Nowak’s feelings now about her former life, on the next Entertainment Tonight!”
And of course she was planning murder. The victim would have disappeared, and Ms. Nowak was just planning to go home, hopefully in a fresh diaper, to get her hair done and go back to her life (and Commander Offie, AKA “The Love Machine”)

standby for orders directing you to duty as a member of a court martial panel…

    that’ll be fun.

  • Kristen

Wow. It never occured to me that she’d be able to stay in the Navy. At the very least, isn’t that conduct unbecoming?

I find it hard to believe that she wasn’t contemplating murder, even if the criminal charges don’t include that word. And yet still, when I look at her picture, I feel pity. She was at the top, and that’s a long, long way to fall.

  • Phil Andrilla

Kristen – It’s not likely she will be permitted to stay in the Navy. She may even lose her retirement pay.The charges that could be brought against her are just a lose/lose situation…feel very sorry for her and her family. The Navy (and NASA) loses an obviously talented, well educated, proficent pilot and dedicated officer. She loses…everything.

Affairs of the heart…who could say they would have been so much smarter.Sad story, the press should just leave it be.
