I mentioned a few weeks ago that my OR professor from Monterey was battling stage IV cancer. I think I mentioned that I respected the fact that he was spending the time he isn’t passing in chemo trying to teach us how to, you know: Optimize things.
I have to tell you, they guy is truly an inspiration. He’s savagely bright, doesn’t much suffer fools – a particular challenge in our class – and a great teacher. He’s also pretty much in continuous pain, but he shows no sign of giving up or giving in. He’s going the distance with the devil himself, and tweaking the bad man’s nose along the way.
I’ve got to tell you, I admire that.
He’s also a blogger, as I discovered today. Sharing his tale as a way of leaving something behind, worst comes to worst, and sharing with others who are going through similar circumstances the knowledge that they’re not all alone in this.
Go and look at an inspiration, maybe drop him a note if it serves you. Don’t tell him I sent you, though: I haven’t finished my final yet. Wouldn’t want it to be thought I was sucking up.

Beannachtai na Feile Padraig oraibh! (Blessings of the Feast of Patrick on you!). We’re on our way downtown to show our support for the troops and then to Duffy’s Pub and Four Green Fields (daughter is a champion Irish stepdancer). My husband was a Navy A4 Skyhawk pilot years ago, so I thought I’d say hi. Looking forward to checking out your blog more often. Slainte!
