Divide and conquer

Right?

Em. Maybe?

Iraq’s Baath Party, once the machine of Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical rule and now a key player in the country’s civil war, has been divided by an internal power struggle pitting one of Hussein’s top aides against a former general, U.S. and Iraqi government officials say.

U.S. military and intelligence officials are still debating whether to welcome the power struggle or fear it. But they agree the outcome could strongly influence the course of the Sunni-led insurgency against Iraq’s U.S.-backed government.

It’s hard to understand how this point is debatable, to me. Consider the reverse argument:

Iraq’s divided Baath Party, once the machine of Saddam Hussein’s tyrannical rule and now a key player in the country’s civil war, has put aside an internal power struggle to unite in their efforts against the democratically-elected Iraqi government and the coalition forces that support it.

U.S. military and intelligence officials are still debating whether to welcome this development or fear it. But they agree the outcome could strongly influence the course of the Sunni-led insurgency against Iraq’s U.S.-backed government.

I am only a knuckle-dragging, caveman* strike fighter pilot. I fell on some ice, and later got thawed out by some of your intelligence analysts. Your world frightens and confuses me! I am unused to all of this “technology” and the “caveats” you speak of. My primitive mind can’t grasp these concepts. But there is one thing I do know: When your enemy is dividing and fighting amongst themselves, it, you know: Kind of looks like an exploitable opportunity. To me.

Thank you.

  • Divide and conquer.
    Isn’t that the maxim?
Even a lowly Army Grunt, such as myself, can figure that one out.

Knock their short appendages in the dirt while they are at each other’s throats.

*That was hard to clean up.

    Good day.

Yeah, whoever said fracturing the insurgency into smaller groups would make it harder to combat them, never “defeated in detail” anything more menacing than a raw steak with a steak knife. But I suspect those who worried about the situation becoming more complex truly just wanted to kill all the bastards at once and go home, and therefore could be forgiven for wishing for a swifter, less complex end of the mission. That said, they would probably also be equally happy to beat the snot out of smaller and smaller groups at a time until they were all dead. Job satisfaction, you know.
