OK, I know that there are any number of ground pounder type guys who tromp through these spaces with their muddy boots and beetled brows and penchant for the close-in exchange of massive amounts of high velocity firepower while – and this is the crazy part – actually in range of them as who could shoot back.

And you know I’ve done my bit for you over the years, what with posting thoughtful paeans to “foreign women with rifles” and pics of Scarlett Johansson with a VMI ring and so forth. I don’t ask for much. You’ve gotta give me that.

So I’m asking this: What is it with the whole “Guidons, guidons, guidons” business. It’s a flag, right? In the pennant class, if I recall correctly.

Why are there three of them? What can it all signify? Is it a radio thing? A cav thing?

Prolly hopeless: Took me the first 20 years to sorta-kinda understand Marines. As well as anyone outside the Corps possible can.

Which is maybe 23% or so.

Neptunus Lex: Doing that learning thing pretty much continuously since 1960. Or so.

  • Yeah, Halsey was an inspiring kind of guy, but my taste in Admirals tends to run more towards the thinkers, like Raymond Spruance and Ching Lee.

Is it beyond possibility that we could have Lex hoist his flag? I mean, that Morrison fellow got to do that, and didn’t write as well as Lex does, and never flew off of, or on to, an aircraft carrier, as far as I know.

    (except as a passenger, maybe)

I’m afraid the only flag I’m ever likely to hoist will have the skull and crossbones on it. I’m hoping that Keira Knightley will then buss me on the cheek for doing so.

It is a dream I have.

DAT is really an old term. It stood for Dumb A$$ Tanker. But once the M1 came along and all its electronic doo dads it was changed to CDAT for Computerized Dumb A$$ Tanker.

When we transitioned from M113s to Bradleys when I was a company commander we talked about making Bradley Boots…jungle boots with straps. Not a good idea.

Oh, and I want to make sure we are talking about armor folks. We are not talking about cavalrymen. Cav is a state of mind….usually delusional.

delusional as i am, i still gots my happy strappies…

21 years later, i’m on my 6th set of soles, 8th set of heels, 2nd set of straps and buckles, and my original spurs.

life is good as a C-DAT cavalryman (even if i don’t never ever get to play on my panzers no more)

  • Ok, no flag, but could you score me a Tiger Cruise? Pretty please? You could, like, temporarily adopt me, or something, right?

I’d let you shoot my Star PD. ( though it really needs a new recoil spring)
