Breathe into the paper bag, Keith

I sure he sleeps just fine, blanketed as he is with his mantle of smug moral superiority, but I wonder how long it is after he awakes in the morning when MSNBC sportscaster Keith Olberman starts quivering with indignation at all the things that aren’t going quite his way in the world.

Today he looks at the democratic process at work – the efforts of a slim majority in Congress to alter the course of the war through means other than their Constitutional power of the purse, the subsequent presidential veto, the ensuing compromise – and declares that we have been betrayed, all of us. Well, he has anyway.

After a bit of his accustomed hyperventilating at the president – a LYING LIAR WHO ALWAYS LIES!!!1! – he turns his eviscerating wit and deathless prose on the democratic majority in Congress thus:

Not that these Democrats, who had this country

Bravo, Sir! I would love to see you also line your crosshairs up on those two communists on The View, Rosie and Whatshername.

  • Ens Tim,

Why bother with the two morons on The View? Everyone already beats that dead horse enough.

    Lex,
Shouldn’t Mr. Olberman stick to the topic of sports? He might be taken more seriously then.

No wonder MSNBC is at the bottom of the heap.

I went to high school with him. We’re the same age, but he skipped two years, and graduated early. While Keith had a sharp wit way back then and could be rather caustic, he was always funny, and never this nasty. I have always wondered what happened to fill him with such rage.

  • Casca

He is quite obviously around the bend, and should be sedated. I can’t believe that you gave him more than ten seconds in passing. He’s a great example of the mess that is MSNBC. In any case, who cares. Nobody but the wacko-fringe watches them.

  • RPL said: I have always wondered what happened to fill him with such rage.

Personally, I think KO’s rage is affectation and opportunism, pure and simple. He’s found a shtick that works and a loving audience in the “netroots,” to whom he’s a sort of folk-hero.

I watched the first few episodes of “Countdown” when it first aired and the rage just wasn’t there…although it did come on rather rapidly after those first three or four episodes. And the rage drove me away. There’s nothing quite so off-putting as an advanced case of BDS in full public view. Unless, of course, you happen to be one of the afflicted, as well.

Do agree with the essence of my new good buddy Casca’s comments # 4 above…although gelding him would be my recommended cure for his certifiable nutty-ness.

RPL, I think his rage is a put-on to secure ratings…to no effect here…he’s unwatchable.

    Best

A minor clarification…when I said in my comment # 6 above, ” although gelding him would be my recommended cure for his certifiable nutty-ness”… I was refering to Keith Olberman and not Casca…the jury is still out regarding Casca’s fate. Best

  • Um, not to “impugn” any sports fans in these here pages, but how did a sportscaster get to be a talking head of the political persuasion?

  • Michelle

    Snake, Snake, Snake (shaking head)
That’s all I got to say on that subject…

  • I agree with Buck – I used to watch (and like) him on ESPN – ah, back in the day when I had time to watch college football – and he had passion for sports but there was no rage. He’s found a role that works for him and he’s using it. None of it is genuine.

And, obviously, the many thinks he’s too good for spell check or an editor. Arrogant bastard.

forget the celebs good soldier…that kind of anilinating heat plus accuracy is preserved for
    those most deserving:anti-American politicos,
“journalists”, profs/lawyers. save the JADM’s for the worthy fish. NL:thank you, maybe set aside a special “fishfry” archive for our use and enjoyment ?

  • I watched it because I like Countdown. There are a lot on the far left who echo his sentiments-and this will hurt The Speaker and Sen Reid no matter what they do.

The point Olbermann ignores is the that the Democratic majority is not that large. And a couple of events broke the Democrats way that could have just as easily gone to the Republicans.

He’s also missing the fact the the FY09 appropriation bill is coming due as the summer goes on and as Fred Kagan’s strategy gets spun and re-spun, they are going to rake DOD over the coals to get anything at all. Which is where I always thought they should be pitching the fight, by showing the real cost of the war in the budget and stop allowing the President to hide it in supplementals.

Both Olbermann and O’Reilly don’t get the facts straight but they are both laughing all the way to the bank.

  • Lee

Seems to me that Olberman mostly echos the far left blogs verbatim. O’Reilly is closer to center politically, but has strong conservative values that appeal to most Americans (as evident by the ratings, he kills ‘em all). The thing I don’t get about O’Reilly, is that for a guy who seems to have an impecable research staff, they sure don’t get it when it comes to an understanding of oil refineries & supply and demand. As for Olberman, he should have stayed glued to Dan Patricks side, they were a good team, and entertaining. Too bad he let a good time be ruined by jumping into the screaming match that is our mainstream media.

  • unkawill

I think KO is hilarious, he certainly has strong opinions and he loves to provide his own facts.

As far as Gelding the slug, from what I recall in the gossip rag that comes with Sunday edition, The “Ladies” are less than Impressed.

  • [...] Neptunus Lex grandly – as he is quite capable of doing – takes down Keith Olberman who?Ǭ

  • [...] Neptunus Lex grandly – as he is quite capable of doing – takes down Keith Olberman who goes off ranting at the dumocrats for being the spineless wimps they are and misuses the word “impunity” and instead says “impugnity”. Says Lex: I think the word you’re looking for is “impunity,” Keith. You have “impugned” the democratic process, something you can do with “impunity” because your rights are protected by far better men than you who want to complete their mission in the defining struggle of our times. [...]

  • O’ Reilly is a bully and buffoon. When he has a guest on with opinions different than his all he does is lecture them or cut their mike. At least with Olbermann you get better written pose.

And he bashes Bush, over and over. That’s ALWAYS fun to watch.

  • badbob

Gee Skippy, between blogging and TV you ain’t out much..I thought you was a lady’s man. LOL>

Lex, as you’ve said before (I think), anyone who invokes Hitler should automatically lose an argument.

I have literally never, not a single time, watched KO. And, frankly, I’m someone who would probably agree with him a lot. Still, I would guess that no one can top Sean Hannity for preening, smug, self-righteousness and an utter lack of concern for relevant facts.

In any case, between snark and vitriol on the blogs and self-righteous garbage on the TV, it is a miracle that genuine democratic debate survives anywhere.

One last thought: If I concede that “terror” is the great struggle of our time (and I think internal decay and maybe China eclipse it), then I think Iraq is a strategic error that was bound to flounder. Hopefully this will not irreparably damage the whole effort. Many here will disagree, of course, and I respect that.
