Sent along by alert reader Babs:
SAN FRANCISCO - The annual aerial show by the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels — a San Francisco tradition dating back to 1981 that pumps millions into the local economy — is running into opposition from three local peace advocacy groups that are calling for a permanent halt to the popular Fleet Week flyover.
CodePink, Global Exchange and Veterans for Peace, Chapter 69, are working with Supervisor Chris Daly on a Board of Supervisors resolution to address concerns over the Blue Angels.
Daly acknowledged he is considering a call to halt the flyovers because, he said, “they seem dangerous and unnecessary.” Daly said he plans on introducing the resolution as early as Tuesday, but is still drafting the language. A resolution is not legally binding, but states a board position.
You know, in a way - and no offense to the real people living in and about the bay area, SJBill - this would kind of be a relief. As a city, San Francisco has long ago stopped pretending that they support their military. We could stop pretending that we like San Francisco.
We don’t have to like San Francisco. We get paid to defend them. It’s our job.
The rest of the country?
We’re doing that for free.

Cap’n,
It’s all very much a pity, they being so enamoured of their “rights”, yet unwilling to actually, well, defend them and all that. I suppose it’s a reflection of the enlightened liberal aristocracy, which has rooted itself in firm and nourishing soil about the bay, that they are aware of their patrician status and need not worry about sufficient numbers of the plebes being found to act as rankers for their legions. Legions which they suppose will remain steadfast in protecting those “rights”, regardless of the patronizing ways with which they are dealt.
Perhaps it would be better for the fleet to take up anchor and set sail for a more accomodating port of call, say, for example, Los Angeles, where their are wonderful opportunities for refreshment and the sorts of plebian delights that, well, sailors are known to seek out and relish in, debauchery being a rather subjective term in my own personal lexicon, and open to more, dare I say, “liberal” interpretations. But I digress…..
I truly believe that the Navy ought to defer to the wishes of these folks and leave town. In fact, I’d suggest they even cancel all contractual agreements with businesses lovcated within the city limits. Wouldn’t want to offend their nibs by supporting a military/industrial complex in such a peaceful polis, as it were.
It’s true, however, what a not-to-distant philosopher opined: “Hell hath no fury like a pacifist”.
It’s time to admit that we have failed in San Francisco, and abandon it to it’s fate…
Respects,

Agreed 100%. There are far more appreciative and yes, I’ll say it, deserving locations that would love to host the Blues, particularly if they can’t get the far superior Thunderbirds.

I sent this along to Lex knowing he would publish it.
I hope the effort of highlighting this will bring about two things; One, get the Navy to pull all support from the City of San Fran. I am sure I am not the only one that resents their basking under the umbrella of national defense while doing their best to undermine it. Fine, hold your naked parades and see how many hotel rooms and restaurants you fill. Yeah, slubs like me really want to pay money to see a naked parade… (If you actually want to see a naked parade in San Fran go to Zombie.com and drink your fill).
Two, get the sound citizens of the Bay Area to organize and speak up… For God’s sake! Sure, you say, we are trying. Well, try harder… Some say that over half a million people turn out to watch the Angels. How about one tenth of you write to your elected local representatives and tell them to cut it out! Spend a few bucks and deliver flyers to the masses. Make it short and sweet. You want the Angels to come here, stop the insanity. Go to every hotel and restaurant and deliver a flyer.
I assure you that if 50,000 citizens, along with hotel and restaurant concerns, wrote to their elected officials in the Bay Area and told them to stop the madness they would.

Lex,
Got that right — there are tryly lots of bricks in sanctuary for endangered Left-Leaning-Loons.
Received three messages on this subject last evening. I’m not sure how much traction this “news” will receive becuase of (1.) the needs of the FW event by the service recruiting commands; (2.) the money the event brings in to the restaurant and hotel business; (3.) the pride the event brings to area vets, service groups and servicemen / families — who number in the hundreds of thousands. Given this, I sincerely hope that FW will continue — with Blues in SF.
Should the Blues be banned from SF, we have a huge airfield about an hour to the immediate south that would love to stege a performance. The mayors of the towns that surround the Federal Airfield are sympathetic and supportive.
Lex, know anybody down at CNAF or COM3 that can authorize a switch, should one be needed?
V/r,
-SJBill

Some peopole are foolish. They just don’t know a good thing when they see it. On the other hand, others do. The Blue Angels are more than welcome in Halifax!

All I really needed to know about the people pushing this was revealed to me by the following sentence (second paragraph of the linked article):
“CodePink, Global Exchange and Veterans for Peace, Chapter 69, are working with Supervisor Chris Daly on a Board of Supervisors resolution to address concerns over the Blue Angels.”
Good ole CodePink. Notorious for activities supporting causes slightly left of center (at least from this writer’s point of view).
As other posters have opined, just keep SF out of the military, and the military out of SF. To my (previous) service’s shame, the Air Force still operates Onizuka AFS in Sunnyvale, CA. Not very easy to move, due to the fixed assets (large satellite dishes, with all the various support hardware and personnel). I wish the facility could just be shut down, but it isn’t as simple as that.

If nothing else, the Blues can always come to Pax River.
As for SF, I am terribly tempted to recommend a low-level supersonic fly-by as the Fleet says a hearty “Go to hell!”

There was a time, a couple of decades ago, that our family enjoyed being nearby SF (being at PG school in Montery), absent a few notable societal exceptions. Alas it seems that fondness is but a cold relic of the past as insult is heaped upon insult. Comes point when even Lot has to leave the building…

Who watches the Communist News Network?
I didn’t want to dampen morale, so I didn’t mention it earlier, but aside from looking good in uniform, and the ability to say, “yes sir”, I have no idea how Pace got the job in the first place. Musta had enough boxtops saved up.
I wish the Admiral well, and hope that he is a pleasant surprise, but expectations are low.

Casca,
I heard about it about from a Master Chief who said CNN. I don’t watch TV much…truly appreciate your rapier wit though.
BTW- I sent that link about da Blues/Bagdad-on-the-Bay to a retired 0-6 Marine (infantry) who wrote back:
“I agree…but for entirely different reasons. Fly overs and airshows are good. But we can get fleet guys to do that. We don’t any extra strength recruiting for aviators - got plenty of them. Need grunt recruiters. Blue Egos are no longer required in my opinion.”
Any comment on this?

I think they need to improve on their risk analysis. Maybe they ought to stop building on the unstable soil near the Bay, because that is certainly “dangerous” and necessary considering the liquification that occurs during a medium sized earthquake.

Casca, Re your sublimely self-satisfied comment # 17 above…agreed you thankfully need no further encouragement…since you’ve burst on the scene…your knee jerk, locker room, crotch centric, personnal attacks on anyone making any point that you disagree with has, for better or worse, made you something of a standout… unfortunately, in my opninion, it has also lowered the level of discourse around here… while on the plus side it has clearly exposed you to all, as the angry, mean sprited, nasty little Pecker-Head that you are…keep up the nasty work…new Best Bud… Best

Sorry B2, skipped right by you in all the excitement. You must have talked to the Colonel after his third cocktail. I can barely make any sense of it. He sounds like the guy who gave me a five-paragraph order at 0200 on the side of a Fjord in Norway once. If I got the jist of it, we need grunts not pilots.
Considering that we’ve raped the arty and amtrack ranks to create provisional infantry outside of the T/O, he’s preaching the gospel. When my son went through IOC last year, the class was fleshed out with officers destined for these other MOS’s. We’ve always said, “every Marine a rifleman, and every Marine Officer an Infantry Officer”, well, kinda.

Bingo on the jist Casca.
Speaking o’boots what is it with those desert tan “sneakers with the fuzzy side out” looking footgear? Ain’t a dam piece of spit polishable leather or handy piece of brass on them. Whats a gyrene to do? Seems like the most fundamental change for Marines since they gave up Red battle dress.

I’ve spent time in SF. Seen it. It is perhaps the only city in the US that, were it a person, I wouldn’t urinate down its throat if its guts were on fire.
The fleet should take its ball and go elsewhere.

B2, I know! But it’s worse than that. Did you know that sailors run PT now? What’s with that?
I’m really loath to say a kind word about San Fran, being homo-central and all. But, I recommend spending a night at the Marines Memorial Club just around the corner from Union Square (best deal for any military staying in SF, rates based on rank), having afternoon cocktails at the St Francis, and catching sunset at the Top of the Mark. It really is a beautiful city, think of it as Paris.

Thanks Casca, I was hoping someone would defend a fine city peopled by (some) really loony lefties. San Francisco has been “the city” since I was a little guy. Love to visit, but definitely know I couldn’t live there. Kind of like watching a movie with a liberal cast, gotta ignore the politics to enjoy the show.
I’ve been wondering when Fleet Week would be done away with, considering they refused the Iowa for a museum and voted to outlaw JROTC.

My family moved to the Bay Area in 1963 after my father retired from the Air Force. My parents met when he was stationed at Hamilton AFB up in Marin. At that time, the City was a wonderful place, still that combination of refinement and boisterousness that it had developed since the Gold Rush. In the past twenty years or so,though, the people there have ruined it. I’m not so much angry as disappointed. Since the Presidio and Hunters Point closed, it has just spiraled into the dirt. The last straw for me was the phenomenal arrogance surrounding the Missouri. I keep waiting to hear that they want USS Pampanito and the Jeremiah O’Brian to leave. Sad.

Badbob, I think US Army boots have had the rough side out for at least a hundred years, as guided by rational folks who knew that there’s no reason to have anything shiny on you while fighting yer country’s enemies.
And, yep, no need for the spit shine; you should use the time you’d spend achieving black mirror-like effects on your boots exercising with yer weapons so as to be able to more quickly and more violently kill our country’s enemies.
My humble opinion, for what it’s worth.
( As a former bandsman, I do think it’s OK to have shiny boots etc. for parades and all, because those things are kinda fun.

JTG ~ MacGyver (my husband) agrees with you 110%. He’d much rather spend his free time learning how to be a better soldier than shining boots or anything else, for that matter. Originally, the BDU was not supposed to be pressed but some mucky-muck got a wild hair and decided to make it so. Hopefully that will not be the case with the new ACU. Only time will tell.
I don’t care if my husband’s boots are shiny. I just care about him being the best pilot he can be and coming home alive.

re your “Sailors and running”: If’n I was in charge I’d PT the hell outta dem dare fatbodies! Another reason why I am retired and not in charge. LOL.
O’course, I have been caught up in the 2nd MARDIV run with LTGEN Johnston at Lejeuene during the last decade on several occasions…actually sort of a slow pace I thought..but what the hell do I know- I’m just a rustpicking squid!
JTG- re polished boots- they could be pink for all I care as long as our team keeps morting the Mujh-MFS!
re- SF in general- I spent many a fine weekend staying in St. Francis (mil rate special!)with my wife before deploying on “E” and “V”…I love the place. Casca, assign a MEF to take the place down and restore normalcy or at least sanity…
