Pork chop

Pork, the other white meat: It’s what for dinner*:

A former Navy lieutenant has been indicted on federal charges of illegally possessing 60 machine guns.

David Carmel, 32, lost his post as a ship supply officer on the USS Shrike after it was discovered that he ordered hundreds of unneeded parts.

The grand jury indictment was handed down against Carmel on Thursday, only weeks after he was accused by U.S. prosecutors in New York of selling stolen military equipment. Carmel was due in federal court on Monday.

The indictment said the machine guns were found on Carmel’s property in Gilman, along with boxes of gun parts, artillery shells, grenades and a rocket launcher, authorities said. None of these items were properly registered. Gilman is located about 120 miles east of Minneapolis.

The charges filed in New York by prosecutors on May 21 accuse Carmel of selling stolen U.S. military laser targeting devices and machine gun parts to an undercover agent.

The charges also say Carmel purchased hundreds of unneeded laser sights, machine gun barrels, night vision goggles and machine gun parts for the minesweeper USS Shrike. He was soon after relieved of job as a supply officer, and later left the Navy in November 2005.

Gotta be some class of IQ test – it appears that ex-LT Carmel failed.

Sounds like most of the SupO’s, that I’ve known.

  • My pal the supply clerk had a Chevrolet that, whenever a bugle played, snapped to attention.

You do have to tip your hat to the Supply Corps though. Back in the day, you could just give a general description of what you needed, and the SKs (or in the brownshoe Navy..AKs) would do the searching through the purposely complicated supply system. AELs, APLs, 1250s, 1099s, part numbers…WTF? Just give me my damn widget so I can clear the CASREP!! Fast forward to today…Supply pukes don’t want to bother with all that..”Did your divisional supply petty officer fill out the correct paperwork?” Blah Blah Blah…Supply types are the absloute Kings at pawning off their job on the rest of us. It appears they have better things to do…like selling arms.

    Lex,

He’s not a supply officer – Suppo’s on MHC’s are 1st tour SWO Divos. He’s a “fallen angel” who went SWO and then got out. And yes, a USNA grad… (sigh…)

Hotel-Tango-Foxtrot did he get all this materiel from (presumably) Ingleside, TX, up to Gilman, Minnesota? Was it weekend commutes, or did he have this stuff drop-shipped to his home address after he ordered it?

The screwed up part is not that his antics went on for so long. I can’t understand how the scam began at all. I just love how this Father/Son duo expected to sell all this stuff on EBay and not to get caught.

Knock, knock — maybe the Canoe U. ring does have the power to cloud men’s minds.

SJBill – it’s not the Canoe U. ring; this guy was a piece of work long before he got to USNA and somehow made it through the system.

How do you all know that he was a USNA grad? I didn’t see that in the article. Did I miss it?

  • Minnesota does not allow class-3 firearms period. No automatic weapons, no silencers (and boy would the neighbors like to have that restriction eased just after church on a Sunday afternoon!). Anybody buying from this guy would have to see a few red flags raised just from the address!

Ya know, if he’d applied 10% of the mental capacity of this get-rich scheme into, you know, studying and an honest career he’d probably be better off right now. Or at least, not cooling his heels in a federal pen.

    Officer: ATF!
Suspect: Let me guess, this isn’t about the alcohol or tobacco?

  • I want to know just who exactly did he plan on selling all of this stuff to. Let me guess… The buyer attends a Mosque and his name is Mohammed…

Dang hunters always trying to improve their edge…

NVGs & MG parts – are there any crew-served weapons on a Minesweeper? .50cals?

  • “…artillery shells, grenades and a rocket launcher, authorities said. None of these items were properly registered.”

I like the idea that you could properly register a rocket launcher.
