Shakespearians Unite!

Jules Crittenden turns us on to a poll being conducted by Oxford Medievalist on the topic of “Who was the greatest influence on Western Civilization?” – the poll itself is in the sidebar, with these results so far:

The favorite, thus far, has been St Paul who, until a link from Jules Crittenden resulted in an explosion of traffic from Aristotelians, had been the clear front-runner. After mounting this remarkable comeback, Aristotle and St Paul are locked in a tie at 26%, far above the next highest vote-getter, St Augustine of Hippo, who has garnered 10% of the vote. Rounding out the top five are history’s most famous general and arguably it’s most infamous politician, Gaius Julius Caesar, and the leader of the Israelites, Moses, each with 9% of the vote.

As soon as I get around to it, I’ll run that poll I promised you a week or so ago – you know the one: Foreign women with rifles – crazy about ‘em, or just love ‘em a lot? While I’m figuring that out, here’s the jury pool.

And since we’re talking firearms, a quick reminder – always point the weapon in a safe direction while clearing the chamber, and keep your trigger finger outside of the guard while working the slide -

Safety first!

Update: Oh, I almost forgot. Wouldn’t do to have Barb in here batting me around for equal time rights.

    Lex,

I think you’re on to something here. If that whole masters degree thing doesn’t pan out, think about becoming an author of photo books that explain the principles of safe firearms handling. You can get some practice doing this by posting a weekly gun safety photo.

    cheers,

Ain’t nuthin’ embarrassing about seeing well-built men showing off their…build. Hmmm. And as we Lex Babes have said before, it’s about the uniform…even a small one like that guy leading the pack. And yes, the boots DO count…

“…always point the weapon in a safe direction while clearing the chamber, and keep your trigger finger outside of the guard while working the slide…”

Yeah, whatever. Like that’s what you really meant. ;-)

Sic’em, Kris! We know what’s what with that comment!

At least Lex is learning to cover all bases from the start now. Who says an old dog cain’t learn new tricks, hmmm?

Even if it is an Update.

    OHHH…..

She had a GUN… didn’t notice it till someone pointed that out.. sigh…

As to the poll, well, they seem to have left of Charlemagne. He’s got to be the clear-cut winner, because regardless of whatever any other dead foreign guy wrote or said or expounded upon, if the Franks don’t stop the Moors, then it’s lights out for all of civilization.

You can, of course (and probably will) disagree on this, but for my money, none of the rest matter much without Charlemagne’s victory. If the Moors win, well, you can pretty much kiss off any sort of rennassaince, ever. No Gutenburg bible. No Shakespeare. No enlightenment. No American revolution.

You would, however, have pretty total Sharia law throughout Europe, the Americas, Africa, et al.

Certainly no nuns with guns pix, or Sisters of Battle eradicating heretics & witches with the cleansing flames of holy plasma cannons….

    Them what knows, knows… heh.

Aren’t you thinking of Charles Martel?

    J.M. Heinrichs

Yeah… that’s the guy. Frikkin’ French names… they all sound Greek to me :)

But Charlemagne ought to be on their too! Him & Roland helped out at Ronccesvalles,(sp?) no?

    Zane says:

I nominate Jan Sobieski of Poland, whose armies, fighting under the banner of the Black Maria of Krakow, utterly destroyed the Turk outside the gates of Vienna on September 11, 1683. It was all downhill for the Ottoman Empire from there.

    AW1 Tim says:

    Zane,

Yup… he’s a good choice as well. I’d also toss Alexander Nevsky into the mix. He managed to unite Russia and drive out the Teutonic Knights, who were seemingly setting the ground rules for future German expansionist plans in later centuries.

I too viewed the picture of that duskey beauty a number of times before I saw the pistol… and I’m damn proud of it…after all we great and noble males are hard wired from birth to focus in on the essentials… indeed it’s our biological imperative. Best

FYI, the equal opportunity link identifies the operator out front as S. Helvenston. Helvenston was one of the four Blackwater guys killed in Fallujah and was also a contestant on the greatest reality show ever “Combat Missions”.

    Barb says:

You’re getting much better, Lex. At least you added a proper link for the Lex Babes to enjoy. Thank you!
We’ll work on your ability to actually allow them to share space in equal view … I’m sure it’s covered under Title IX somewhere or sumthin. *grin*

    HomefrontSix says:

If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t Helvenston also a friend of Mike Yon’s? Small world.

    Great post, Lex.
Oh, and the words that preceded the picture were good, too.

Barb will forgive me, I hope, if’n I didn’t click on the “I almost forgot” link.
