It is an interesting strategy. Let us downsize and redeploy, thus creating a power vacuum next to one of the countries we hope to contain. They will not try to stabilize and influence that country in being more in line with their own interests. Hmmmmm, interesting. This man must go to church daily to have this kind of faith.

Cap'n, et al,

I fear we in this country not privileged to serve in the Armed Forces are doomed to forever be held in the thrall of a manipulative media and their syncophantic allies. Vietnam, a mis-managed affair at best, is the media's Glory Days; whole reputations were made and built upon(see Dan Rather). Back then, intrepid reporters gleefully toed Uncle Walter's belief this country had no business there. The casualty numbers were the tool used then to dissuade citizens supporting the war. Nowadays, good news coming out of Iraq is throttled by the media while every story approaching bad news is hyped.

It is becoming apparent the media's message is hitting home. Our professional politicians (an ever odious term), many of whom NEVER served, are tired of posturing FOR the struggle and prefer to posture AGAINST. One wonders if Lord Lugar is up for re-election next year.

I'm still in favor of Heinlein's idea of a Federal System.

DaveG: well said - "What a sad and deplorable condition to admit publicly, and worse, globally."

Why bother giving our guys a chance to even get this surge really rockin' and rollin'? Hell, why not just recall them all now...why wait? They are so focused on declaring defeat that they'll never see it's about small victories and progress. What did these asshats expect - total annihilation of all threats in Iraq in 45 days or less? Now that would be nice, but I think most of us live in the real world, not the la la land of these sad excuses for politicians (oh wait, that's an oxymoron isn't it..).

The prospects that the current ‘surge’ strategy will succeed in the way originally envisioned by the president are very limited within the short period framed by our own domestic-policy debate.

Well then, couldn't we just re-frame "our own domestic-policy debate," or is it now the case that our Congress is more entrenched and intractable than Al Queda?

What a sad and deplorable condition to admit publicly, and worse, globally.

That Lugar is a real pistol. (Ok, sorry about that, but I couyldn't help myself)
