Cap'n, et al,

Not only is it a tribute to themselves and the country, think of the morale busting qualities for the other side.

'By Allah's beard Achmed! We keep shooting or blowing up these infidels yet they keep coming back after us! How are we supposed to wage jihad on such as them?'

Along with any of the other unnumerable benefits to them, it HAS to be good general therapy for these wounded warriors - tells them, and others, that they do still have value and can make a contribution. SO glad the military is embracing the idea of allowing them to return to active duty.

We had a short stocky Ranger Instr. in Patrol Phase we knew as Major Spies(sp?) - Until our first graded patrol, no one noticed the unvarnished wooden peg in lieu of his left leg starting mid-thigh...we quickly focused on other things as the SOB literally humped our a$$es off...no one said a thing; it was never a factor. I did wonder how many of the damn things he had to replace annually. I heard later he continued jumping to remain on Airborne status in the Ranger Dept. and I have no doubt he did.

This situation harkins back to that wonderful novel by Robert Heinlein "Starship Troopers"

Where they had amputees working in support roles to free up troops for the combat units.

I am gratified that the military has seen the wisdom of hanging onto the wounded as much as it can. So many have so much to give still, especially as instructors even if not able to deploy.

It's also a matter of "corporate memory" that needs to be retained to benefit those still fighting and those who will be fighting. There's a lot of value in keeping those who have "been there and done that" so others know what to appreciate and what to expect.

Also to know what standards they have to live up to, or to set new standards for the next ones coming along.

Plus, it shows that life goes on and that military life can, too. Reassuring to the soldiers themselves, as well as their spouses and families.
