The limits of free speech

You don’t get to yell “fire” in a crowded theater. You might take a licking if you use fighting words and thereafter have no recourse in the courts. You don’t get to publicly agitate for people to bomb your host country because people in a different country penned cartoons critical of your prophet.

Not in Britain, anyway:

Four men have been jailed for their part in protests outside the Danish embassy in London, against cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad.

Mizanur Rahman, 24, Umran Javed, 27, and Abdul Muhid, 24, were each jailed for six years for soliciting to murder after telling a crowd to bomb the UK.

A fourth man, Abdul Saleem, 32, was jailed for four years for stirring up racial hatred at the protest in 2006.

The men, from London and Birmingham, were convicted at the Old Bailey.

Judge Brian Barker said their words had been designed to encourage murder and terrorism.

Strange. They looked like such nice young men.

Lex, it appears to me, you taking a well deserved hard look at the “holy grail” of America, free speech. I AM NOT TRYING TO PUT WORDS IN YOUR MOUTH! It is my personal belief, when our “Founding Fathers” spoke of free speech, they were actually talking of RESPONSIBLE FREE SPEECH. I am talking about all of us in the United States. This would even include our politicians and even this GRUMPY old Vet.

    Have a GREAT DAY,
    Grumpy

  • What’s the saying… something about rights only extending to the point that they don’t infringe on someone else’s? I think that’s what your saying about responsible free speech.

U tell ‘em Grumpy. One may say anything the heart desires. That doesn’t mean that you won’t get your ass kicked.
