I don’t often say this

But read Ralph:

To a military professional, the tactical progress made in Iraq over the last few months is impressive. To a member of Congress, it’s an annoyance.

The herd animals on Capitol Hill – from both parties – just can’t wait to go over the cliff on Iraq. And even when the media mention one or two of the successes achieved by our troops, the reports are grudging.

Yet what’s happening on the ground, right now, in Baghdad and in Iraq’s most-troubled provinces, contributes directly to your security. In the words of a senior officer known for his careful assessments, al Qaeda’s terrorists in Iraq are “on their back foot and we’re trying to knock them to their knees.”

Do our politicians really want to help al Qaeda regain its balance?

I don’t think so, not really. They just want to wish them away.

I think I’m losing my mind.
(No comments from the peanut gallery please.)

I could have swore the headline to that article read “Winning in Iraq and Losing in Afghanistan” until I finished the article and refreshed the page at which point the headline read “Winning in Iraq and Losing in Washington”.

Okay. Must be too hot in here. I think I will just head over to Peggy’s Cove.

AQ doesn’t enter into the equation for them. Their lives, like the lives of most Americans revolve around self-interest. The politician’s self-interest is re-election. For every elected democrat, power is the grail. Any lie may be told, any good man’s career may be crushed, as long as they get to hold the gavel, or sit in the oval office. There is a remarkable freedom in campaigning when unfettered by conscience or truth.

The R’s in the house are gunshy from last November. The R’s in the senate are riddled by turncoats. The President is a good man who is unable to run an organization capable of crafting a coherent message. I guess you can make history, or write about it. One supposes this is the reason R. Emmet Tyrell writes under the banner, “The Continuing Crisis”.

The Dems ARE the party of Darkness. Not too enamoured with the R’s either. Particularly the ones with the weather vane up their fourth point of contact.

  • Michelle – online news sites do that alot these days. The Associated Press is famous for it – FbL will actually do screen prints throughout the day to preserve the “headline trail” on a story of interest.

Do our politicians really want to help al Qaeda regain its balance?

    Why, yes. Yes, they do.

Because it’s Bush’s war, don’cha know? And it’s all his fault! He must not win; therefore, Al Qaeda must win and he must lose.

Except for that part that it’s not really Bush that loses, but the United States as a whole. And our military, who are all volunteers doing exceptional jobs in exceptional circumstances. And of course, that we really are winning the hearts and minds of Iraqis after all.

But that doesn’t matter, because it’s Bush’s war.

    Whew — logical, too.

I need a cluebat to take to Washington, DC. Any volunteers to line them up for me?

    Thanks Kris.
I really thought I was losing it. Because when I got to the end of the article I wondered why they hadn’t mentioned A. when it was in the headline. And then it was gone….
