I wonder if he cleared that with Higher?

Nothing says calm, serene confidence like rolling over on your back in the presence of the intolerant:

A Roman Catholic Bishop in the Netherlands has proposed people of all faiths refer to God as Allah to foster understanding, stoking an already heated debate on religious tolerance in a country with one million Muslims.

Sic transit gloria.

The article cites:”Bishop Muskens, who will shortly retire…” Apparently not “shortly” enough..he has a certain reputation as a rebellious child.

In another article(CWNews): “The Dutch bishop admitted that his suggestion was not likely to gain widespread acceptance. But he predicted that within a century or two, Dutch Catholics would be addressing prayers to “Allah.”

Correct on the first part; hopefully he’s not prescient on the second.

And adding insult to injury, the above occured on the memorial (14Aug1480) of the 800 Catholic Martyrs of Otranto (Italy), executed by the Ottoman Turks for refusing to convert.

  • Personally I think Europe is lost to the “Islamization” of the West. While this good Bishop is small potatoes from a small country and a small parish (membership on decline) – it’s still a sign of things to come.

are we absolutely sure this guy ain’t Episcopalian?

    Hey, I resemble that remark!

However, it does make bringing back the Latin Mass a little more palatable, if just to get away from this kind of equivication.

I really wish people would engage their brains before issuing press releases. This Bishop is also one who says it’s okay to steal if you’re hungry and wants a term limit on the Pope of 10-15 years or age 85, whichever comes first. He sounds rather flakey, and probably a good thing he’s due to retire soon. Hopefully, before completely moving himself to the “ignore him, he’s nuts” pile.

MajMike…My favorite/fellow Tread-Head…my thoughts exactly…great minds and all…but be aware and stay alert… bolts of lightning could be speeding your way at this very moment by way of San Diego (nee SANDY EGGO)… complements of the Right Most Reverend Capt. Lex. Best

Hizzoner is serenely indifferent to the snarkatron of the betracked set.

Though he will admit that the same thought crossed his mind. That and the image of a certain hat.

P-3W, et al., I think you’ll enjoy this brand new survey being run over at Christianity Today:
    http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/features/poll.htmley

Their respondents say that God and Allah ARE NOT the same to the tune of 64% at the last check. This harkens back to our former discussion on the same point; interesting how it comes up again and again.

Question: how could “Allah” be the Arabic name for “our” God and yet they call us the unbelievers? If Allah were “our God”, only in a different language, everything would surely be academic, right? There wouldn’t be any need for Jihad, would there?

    Out of their own mouths…

Sorry about the double post; the link should be:

And for this I converted from Episcopalian to Catholic? Pah!

Actually, Allah means “The God,” not “God,” a clear evidence that Allah was originally only one of the 365 gods at Mecca. Had three daughters, too, which escaped the censors and ended up in Surah 55 (IIRC), in the section known as “the Satanic verses.”

As for the Bishop, he’s Dutch, what else can you expect?

  • OMFG – I mean, OMFA, I can´t believe it.

I think the great divide has very little to do with El Shaddai/G-D/Allah and very much to do with Mohammed.

  • It didn’t take long…Guess who has come out in support of our doddering Bishop – 10 points to anyone who said CAIR. That’s right – our friends at CAIR said this yesterday:

“Ibrahim Hooper, a spokesman for the Council on American-Islamic Relations, backs the idea as a way to help interfaith understanding.

“It reinforces the fact that Muslims, Christians and Jews all worship the same God,” Hooper told FOXNews.com. “I don’t think the name is as important as the belief in God and following God’s moral principles. I think that’s true for all faiths.”

Also, the Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago had something similar to say:

    “?

““I think it will open up doors,” said Janaan Hashim, a spokeswoman for the group representing more than 400,000 Muslim Americans in the Chicago area. “Language is a man-made limitation. I think what God cares about is how we fulfill our purpose in life.””

  • The proposed verbiage doesn’t do much for Jews, Jehovah’s Witnesses, or for that matter atheists & agnostics. Which points out a major problem with strong-form multiculturalism: you can’t please everybody.

So, in practice, the extreme multiculturalists tend to focus those who are most credible in offering threats or bribes.

  • Michelle

Yeah, I was going to suggest that the Muslims might just as well start referring to Jehovah or Yawaheh (sp?) as everyone else start using Allah. After all, its just language, man-made limitaiton and all…. don’t mean squat apparently.

Hmmm, perhaps “What’s His Name” (sorry, no disprespect intended but now I have no idea what the proper handle is for that Creator dude) knew what he was doing at the Tower of Babel, heh?

  • What about those of us who just don’t have the religious temperament? Don’t have the buzz in the temporal lobes? Maybe we might think that a Deity exists, who may or may not care what we think, or we may not. Or the Deity may exist, even if we don’t think He does.

M’self, except for rare occasions, I’ve gotten no emotional fun from religion. I think the benefits were more subtle, and showed up later, somewhat after my attempts at prayer.
