Casca,

A Navy CWO I know had his soon injured last week. IED- Humvee. He's at Bethesda now:

"The phone conversation with the doctors went great. My son is in good spirits and is ready to get home. The foot and leg will probably have additional operations when he gets into the US, probably next weekend. All his other wounds are healing nicely. He was able to talk with his mother and is still under a lot of guilt because of the serious injuries of his fellow Marines in the Humvee. The Brain Scan was normal and they didn't see any swelling or injury when it was complete. Lets just get him home now."

Brothers. Heroes. Every last one of 'em.

An interesting read, but where in the hell are the combined arms? This machine gun warfare bullshit just doesn't cut it. My fear from the start of this stuff was that we'd lose our indirect fire skills simply from not using them. Back before the earth's crust cooled, we didn't patrol outside of our arty fan, and you always knew where your closest registered fires were. When your only tool is a hammer, you tend to treat everything like a nail.

Got a letter from Casca II last week. Bn lost their first KIA, and three WIA's out by the border, not the least of which was his running mate Ferg. They've been together since TBS/IOC, but early reports indicate that his wounds are slight. He did take an AK round to his kevlar CVC helmet, but it worked as advertised, and he was able to run one bad guy over with the LAV, and make short work of the other four with 25mm & 7.62.

Wow.

Cottus is right and so is Lex..but this was published in the WaPo...A MSM stakeholder.

Glad to see the immediate initiative taken by our soldiers when they closed and confronted. Too bad attack helos weren't close to the scene. Too close for blue-on-blue maybe? The next mornings mop up ambush was tragic for a lotta reasons.

Bottom line of what I get out of this story-waPo or not- Where they mass we will kill them. We need to catch 'em like this more often. This enemy are as ferocious as the Japanese were in WWII. Prisoners were rare unless specially 'procured'....While we can't expect Banzai charges, we can hope they continue to fight us head to head because mission success as defined by Gen Petraues will follow eventually.

Well. You must have gotten to me.

If I picked up any negativity in the story (no matter what happens, "we" can't ever actually win), it was very trivial. For the most part, all I really saw was a gripping tale of the American soldiers pressing on and "winning" the engagement, no matter what.

Think I've been brain-washed or something?

I don't disagree with your underlying presumption, Cottus - the MSM has a need to "balance" even this gripping tale of a meeting engagement and superior soldiering with a "but" codicil. Can't let everyday heroism and the triumph of good over evil go without context after all.

But as you say, I think enough of us have learned to read between the lines and filter out the drivel. We will soon see what will yet obtains.

Sorry Lex, your posting failed my 'overnight" test. I woke up this morning just as disturbed by this bit of MSM propaganda, as I was last night, if not more so.

For the umpteenth time, everybody, war is about survival....wars are won by superior will.

Now you have many regular readers, Lex, and we all have one thing in common: We make connections in our minds with your postings that bring us pleasure, good feelings. I have no doubt many can read this bit of "we cannot ever win", "our enemy's will is indefatigueable" "what's the point?" drivel from a known propaganda mill and see only an interesting military Op. filled with bravery, the magnificent quality of our guys, and a reminder, perhaps, of cool sh1t in our individual experience.

All I can see, however, is a reminder of the failure of American will. And the dark shadow of our demise.
