Innovation isn’t a destination, brother

It’s a path.

A touch-screen iPod has been added to Apple’s popular line of portable music players.

The gadget also has wi-fi and a web browser on-board so people can buy music when they are out and about.

The device was unveiled by Apple boss Steve Jobs during a press conference that also showed off revamped versions of the other models of music players.

The overhaul comes in time for the key US holiday season when Apple typically sees an upturn in sales of the players.

So its like the iphone, minus the phone bit. I would never buy an iPod. Non-replaceable batteries aren’t a good idea.

Blarg: I have to disagree with you . . . I haven’t yet gone to the iPhone….I don’t use the internet on my current Razor anyway, but the other stuff it does is spectacular…..and as for the iPod Touch…..well – I have to get a new iPod anyway, so why not?? That screen quality is unreal, having photos to show to people would be great, movies might be fun on it, and the price is very close to iPod prices too.

I’ve not been a big Apple fan in the computing world (non-nerd here)…but this stuff they are coming out with is truly great. I’m even excited about this one.

    Blarg:

You can replace iPod batteries; I’ve done several. After the first one, it’s reasonably not too hard (I’ve been in computer engineering groups as a tech writer for about 25 years, and I know very well how to break stuff. This is kind of different with plastic in place I’m used to metal, but the battery kits can show you how to do the job, if you pay attention.)

Expect to see iPhone battery replacement kits and services out there pretty soon. If you’re not comfortable with soldering little stuff, go with the service. The iPods I’ve worked on don’t need any soldering, just a bit of care opening up.

  • I to think I was the first one on my block with a Walkman, when they first came out…how the mighty have fallen…at least I have a digital camera now!

1 in 6 laptops being sold now are apples.

i should know: i was the 1 in that 6.

(and yes, i *do* love my MacBookPro w/17in HiDef display and Core2 technology!)

  • I’m trying not to drool on my keyboard. Damn you , Lex.

  • Why can’t they make it a full featured PDA? Then I could replace my Palm M125 with it. Admittedly, the primary thing I do with the Palm is us it to read e-books, and the bigger and better the screen, the better it would be for me.

Good on you SteveH, I know how to solder as well. But I can count on one hand the number of people outside of my profession that know ow to solder as well.

The iPod batteries last between 300-500 charges. By that time some new, spiffy iPod is just rolling out onto the market

It is brilliant from a marketing perspective, but I think it is rather unethical.

As for the people buying Macs, good for you. I hope you enjoy your designer Linux box.

Sometimes, tongue in cheek, I think to myself that S.Jobs is some sort of pusher, always coming up with new ways of getting our kids addicted to his iCrack.

My kid (14yrs old) saw the product announcement, and decided that she would get one, even if she has to pay for it herself. She even wanted to know if she could open a bank acct, so she could earn interest on her $$, and thereby reach the price of the device that much sooner.
