Don't you know
That you're over the hill
When your mind makes a promise
That your body can't fill?

Dunleavy is a great American. I still have memories of his "take on all comers" call at Oceana about a month after he canned the F-14D. Talk about playing to a hostile audience-an NFO addressing a hall full of pilots, RIO's, BN's, and E-2 NFO's trying to make the case he had not betrayed the brotherhood to Brand X.

Or is that Brand Lex? :-)

S0mehow I don't think Dunleavy would have fit well in Uncle Vern's corporate Navy though. Which is a shame.

LOL Skippy,

Waren't me. Was some Hornet JO in about 90 time-frame complaining about the bonus that some communities were getting (and his wasn't).

Him: Why not turn that money into flight hours
OP 05: 'Cause that would give everyone about an extra 7 minutes. Next question?
Him: Why not use it to buy weapons?
CNAP: 'Cause we have enough weapons? Next question.
Him: Why Not...
CNAL: Son, what part of this do you not get? We are spending that money where it needs to be spent. Now Drop it... (you know the rest).

CNAL was Dunleavy, I'd follow that guy anywhere. Great leader, great American.

Someone ask SJS about the message he wrote for Admiral Dunleavy when he was on the CNAL staff.

Disgusting acts? I wouldn't know, as I enlisted when the world went from Liberty Call to Warrior Monk.

Perhaps an example would do. I went to nuke school twice; once before the big culture shift and once after. The first time, everyone told PI stories and suchlike. The guy I went to boot camp with got busted for coke and wound up bouncing at a strip joint. Another shipmate washed out and went to <em>Iowa</em>'s fatal gun turret. The second time around as an ensign, our senior student was a Tailhook victim who never put on the rank for which he was selected. We also were forced to attend many a political indoctrination session. I show up at the boat and the guys are wearing "(Boat) In The PI: Will The Last One Out Turn Out The Lights" shirts and we spend something like 270 days at sea that year.

On the other hand I do have some stories, somehow. But they're nothing like those of my predecessors in the force.

I didn't make it myself, but I did get a good dump from those who were there. The major issues for the JO's were IAs, the FRP and retention.

Which, that last one has been an issue since we flew biplanes off the <em>Langley</em>, I think. Some of these guys need to look at how narrow the pyramid gets right above their heads and understand that we don't <em>want</em> to keep all of them.

Anyway.

The IA thing is clearly a valid hit, but the flap panel did a good job both recognizing that and providing a balanced answer. The FRP issue surprises me, since all of the current crop of JOs came to the fleet after the FRP had already been implemented. I guess the real issue that people are concerned about is that we might have tailored Navy to perfection, and whatever slack capacity is left has to be provided by over-time and optempo.

It's probably the most valuable thing we have, making the big fellas answer up to the little guys. If for no other reason, that's why Tailhook needs to happen.
