I still have memories of his "take on all comers" call at Oceana about a month after he canned the F-14D. Talk about playing to a hostile audience-an NFO addressing a hall full of pilots, RIO's, BN's, and E-2 NFO's trying to make the case he had not betrayed the brotherhood to Brand X. Or is that Brand Lex? :-) S0mehow I don't think Dunleavy would have fit well in Uncle Vern's corporate Navy though. Which is a shame. Dunleavy is a great American. Another shipmate washed out and went to <em>Iowa</em>'s fatal gun turret. The second time around as an ensign, our senior student was a Tailhook victim who never put on the rank for which he was selected. We also were forced to attend many a political indoctrination session. I show up at the boat and the guys are wearing "(Boat) In The PI: Will The Last One Out Turn Out The Lights" shirts and we spend something like 270 days at sea that year. On the other hand I do have some stories, somehow. But they're nothing like those of my predecessors in the force. Disgusting acts? The major issues for the JO's were IAs, the FRP and retention. Which, that last one has been an issue since we flew biplanes off the <em>Langley</em>, I think. Some of these guys need to look at how narrow the pyramid gets right above their heads and understand that we don't <em>want</em> to keep all of them. Anyway. I guess the real issue that people are concerned about is that we might have tailored Navy to perfection, and whatever slack capacity is left has to be provided by over-time and optempo. It's probably the most valuable thing we have, making the big fellas answer up to the little guys. If for no other reason, that's why Tailhook needs to happen.
