Signs of the apocalypse #265

And this in North by-God Carolina:

On the sixth anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, students at one high school were not allowed to wear clothes with an American flag.

Under a new school rule, students at Hobbton High School are not allowed to wear items with flags, from any country, including the United States…

The superintendent of schools in Sampson County calls the situation unfortunate, but says educators didn

  • Thank (most of) your NEA dues-paying- educators for this kind of crap.

  • I think we’re not so screwed, knowing a lot of young, hard charging, worldy beyond their years, steeped in the crucible of deployment to not only combat an enemy, but to provide “muddy boot diplomacy” who will rise to leadership positions, in the government, in civil service and in industry, to provide not just balance, but a healthy dose of reality.

Worked after WWII…I think it will happen again.

  • GEO6 ~ thanks for the (insert). While I was actively employed as a teacher, I paid NEA dues primarily for the access to legal representation should I ever need it. However, I firmly and vehemently disagree with many of their positions on current issues.

It is a difficult position to be in as a teacher. There are not many alternatives to the NEA.

Seems to me from Openbah’s link that organizations such as the ACLU are spitting in the face of the very spirit of patriotism that made the rights they enjoy possible. Biting the shoulder attached to the arm of the hand from which one feeds…

  • I’m of two minds (at least) about this. Doesn’t Federal law forbid wearing the flag as clothing? I wouldn’t mind an actual small flag on a small stick which was stuck in a buttonhole, or something.

This rot set in back in June of 1944 when all those guys who went into Normandy wore flag patches on their shoulders, because so many of them were n00bs who couldn’t distinguish uniforms. Now Cops (the most un-American institution in America) wear them on their sleeves, and my gorge rises every time I see that.

I would forbid the display of foreign flags, though

  • Anybody ever see the movie “Easy Rider”? Having a flag sewn on the back of a biker jacket, or painted on the tank of chopper, was darned near an affront to Mom, apple pie, and probably baseball. Today it seems this is not the case.

Not defending these bozos, on the contrary I quite agree with Lex, it’s just interesting how times have changed.

Granted I did go to High School in CA, one time they thought of enforcing some kind of dress code and we just walked out of the classrooms until it was set right.

Come to think of it, we did that more than a few times for various things, mostly pertaining to our freedoms. You can make a difference, and all.

I wonder what would happen if the students placed a bunch of the small parade waver flags around the school, a prank if you will. Is it possible to vandalize a school in the United States with a United States Flag?

    Enough is enough.

Ugh, high schools, I just hate them. My son was pimping $2 wristbands to save Darfur until I showed him the Sudan oil contract maps. He couldn’t believe it! What? the U.S. isn’t the country sucking the Sudan dry while the people die?
    Does not compute Will Rogers…

  • Babs

I know, it is kind of a dead horse of mine but… anyone that wants to see who is sucking the Sudan dry need only google “Sudan Oil Maps”. Have fun!

  • Sim

Well, they could always wear what I did, black shoes (always Doc Martins), grey slacks, grey shirt (white for year twelve), tie appropriate to your age/house/position and blue blazer (with white piping for year 11 and 12)

  • As you put it Lex these kids and/or adults should be able to wear whatever flag of any country that gave them birth, freedom and opportunity. They should NOT be ashamed of where they came from. Isn’t that what we are teaching them. We all know that Americans are comprised of many ethic backgrounds and have come from many different places. Let’s concentrate on enlightening our children all the different beliefs and variances of the surrounding nationalities instead of squahing them and making them feel ashamed. I do feel for the teachers because I know that they do not support many of these decisions. It is a damn shame. I am starting to encounter this in the local school system as my oldest is in kindergarten. They are not allowed to have certain celebrations due to the beliefs of some. My thought to be truly politically correct shouldn’t we teach our children of the many different beliefs and help them to understand other countries and backgrounds?

  • lex

Sim, do you guys really still wear that rig?

What was that old movie, some girl and her brother lost out back after their pops shot himself?

There was something disturbing about it I recollect. Something perhaps inadvertent…

  • Zane

Walkabout. The film yer thinking about.

Sim, ” Well dog my cat”…as WO-2 Fred H. often exclaimed in the way back…I thought most of you Aussies took a perverse pride in not aping anything British for fear of being called a “Pommy Bastard”. .. or was it just the times and a Digger thing? Best

  • SeniorD

    Cap’n,

To the original thread – are High School Administrators members of NEA or do they have their own union? Sounds like yet another enervation attack on our Country.

  • Sim

    Lex-

Yep, still wear it, a friend of mine from CA is in fact about to trust his kids to my older brothers alma mater, blazer and all.

    Dunno about the movie though.

    Snake-
Not the times nor reserved just for the digs. School uniform still prevails though, in most public (High) schools it’s just black shoes, grey pants and a shirt.

  • Sim

BTW Snake, given your background and vintage I assume you were running around with the AATT-V guys.

  • I’m unimpressed that the ban was lifted on September 12th – meaningless now, at least within the context the kids wanted to wear the flag for in the first place.

  • Web Reconnaissance for 09/13/2007…

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention, updated throughout the day…so check back often….

  • Kris ~ you’re right. Had I been a student there, I would have said to hell with the ban and worn the flag. Let them kick me out and suspend me. I’d be on the evening news in a heartbeat.

Hell, I’d almost have wanted them to suspend me. Would have been a great way to bring attention to the assininity (is that a word?) of the situation. Then again, I’m a pot-stirrer.

When I heard about this I was thoroughly ticked…and although late, glad it is rescinded.

    As for this…

“It absolutely mortifies me to think that after graduating from an institution such as this, prospective citizens will be left to learn the true meaning of citizenship, its rights and obligations, in our universities and colleges.

    We’re screwed.”

I would feel that way except last night I sat at home signing the merit badge cards for all of the Scouts of my troop who earned merit badges over the summer.

    16 Scouts
71 Total Merit Badges since 28 June 07
12 Citizenship in the Nation MBs
11 Citizenship in the Nation MBs

And those same Scouts got up early on a School Day on Tuesday to put up American flags lining the main street of our town.

I am with Curt…I for one feel very good about the future of our country.

  • Albany Rifles

Make that 11 Citizenship in the Community MBs…oops.

  • Babs

Good for you Albany. Scouting is a great program that relies on individual citizens to make it work.

  • Albany Rifles

Thanks Babs, but its not me…its those great young men.

  • Snake Eater

Sim, ” AATT-V guys”… indeed…total pros and did they love to hoot and holler after hours… I feel privileged to have served with threm. Best

  • lex

You know, you’re right Albany. Good solid citizens are everywhere doing the right thing. It just seems like more and more they’re fighing a rearguard action.

    But God bless ya’ anyways.

  • Not to worry Lex. When the stories of Scouts earning merit badges is news, then we’re in trouble. Until then, it’s the norm. This story is only newsworthy because it is unusual.

    Thanks, Cap’n
