God, I wish I’d thought of this.

I wonder if they can get the “family discount” at the NYT?

  • Geez. Look at Ike’s campaign bar. Today, we see four or five rows on an officer of that stature . Do we live in an era of overstatement? Or are all the children indeed above average?

I dunno, G – depending on the uniform, we often wear only the “top 3″ as opposed to the whole salad bowl.

    Same/same, maybe?

Yup, I wish I had thought of that too. Whoever comes up with these spoofs shows some genius, not to mention a wicked sense of humor. If only the MoveOn Morons had half their brains and a tenth the humor.

    But I digress.

Thanks, CAPT Lex. You sure can pick ‘em.

  • As the guinness ad folks say: “Brilliant!”

Only 4 or 5 rows? That seems like a lowball to me. There’s a LCDR I know whose chest candy is about ready to go over his shoulder and down his back. He’s starting to look like a central american general. Wearing the “top three” has numerous advantages. Not the least of which is that it’s less likely to get snagged on the seatbelt.

  • Here is a list of Eisenhower’s decorations and awards. It’s a long list, but that’s partly because he received so many foreign decorations, most of which the uniform regs wouldn’t have permitted him to wear.

Excluding repeat awards, Eisenhower received nine US decorations, six of which were campaign medals. Here he is wearing only his three individual decorations – the Army Distinguished Service Medal (with two of his eventual four oak leaf clusters), the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, and the Legion of Merit. This array places the date of the photo between June 1947 and February 1948.

Judging from other photos, it appears that wearing only the top row, or only individual decorations, was common practice in that era – more so even than today. It often varied by uniform, and there seems to have been a fair amount of latitude permitted to individuals as well. Not that anyone was going to pester General of the Army Eisenhower about not following uniform regs!
