"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier

Anything that can be fixed, is. The Left has been putting the fix in for seventy years now, and they’re good at it. Sen McCarthy really DID have a list of names of commies in the State Dept.
50 students? Out of how many…
I’m kind of adrift in your snark here,,,you are not making yourself very clear.
In your previous post you criticize Bollinger for inviting him. And here too, you claim he has less sense than the 50 students.
But yet you also point out that questioning him, without fear, is exactly the type of thing that should happen here. And the students that you praise also “overwhelmingly agreed that the event was in line with the academic purpose of the University”.
So what is your point exactly?
Cap’n,
I read that story as more of a “Now look what you’ve gotten us into” discussion rather than a suddent infusion of patriotic spinal fluid. Now that the controversy has insured that this reprehensible thug will, indeed, speak at Columbia, we are assured of wall-to-wall media coverage all next week.
The students at Columbia may well ask questions, but given their political leanings, I really don’t believe they will be anything but fluff. As for Dr. Bollinger’s questions? Now that they are published, they’ll be easy to deflect.
I would really like to hear the questions of that ex-pat Iranian woman. Something tells me she won’t get the chance as she is a female in a land of infidels.
Joe Citizen … I think the Captain was making the point that speech on the Columbia campus is not free … it is being ‘controlled’ by the academic powers-that-be and the power group among the student body, so that the Iranian ex-pat woman won’t get a chance to ask questions of Mr. Ahmadinijad. As if he would answer them anyway. The women of the Middle Eastern countries, even those which are currently considered our ‘allies,’ are considered chattel or worse. Women in these countries are not only disenfranchised; for the most part, they are silenced. They are not allowed to drive, or move around freely or get an education except under restraints imposed by the dominant sex, which blames them for every ill of mankind. And yet the liberal left in our country is curiously silent about the gross inequalities which are rife in these cultures.
I fail to see what listening to a psychopath propound these strange and feral philosophies would do to improve the basic knowledge of the selected students allowed to hear him. With the number of Muslims in the faculty and student body of Columbia University, it’s preaching to the choir anyway.
There. I feel better. Thank you, Captain, for your indulgence.
Dwight D. Eisenhower — now there was a great Columbia University president. He signed my diploma back in 1951, you know, when Columbia was still a great university, and Barnard was a pretty good school. And he saw to it that we won the Second World War.
Marianne Matthews
don’t worry Lex. some enterprising young lady journalist from Barnard will write it up for their paper, right after tea and crumpets.
JohnQ, read the posts again. Follow the links. Think for a bit. Maybe do a little outside reading. Then try to make a deductive leap towards a point of view alien to your own. If you still don’t get it, one of us isn’t clever enough to be in this conversation.
It’s not funny if you have to explain it.
What Columbia should do is invite Ahmadinejad to speak as an honored guest. Then, as a gesture exchanging cultures, allow only groups persecuted in Iran to ask him pointed questions – women, homosexuals, etc.
That would be real progress, and would be a true benefit to academia and the advancement of knowledge.
Yup, Marriane, and D.D. Iron-hewer also availed him self of his right to conceal a pistol about his person while president of Columbia, ignoring the silly Sullivan Act.
Dang, Ma’am, do you have a web site? If you don’t, you should, and then use it to tell us about what you’ve seen.
Hi,
Just some FYI:
“Freedom’s Watch could not sit back and allow a terrorist to come to
America masquerading as a world leader. We have an obligation to warn the
world of the dangers of a nuclear Iran and to uncover the true intent, that
being, the destruction of the United States and the State of Israel.
Let’s be clear, Iran today kills American soldiers in Iraq and they will not stop
there,” said Bradley A. Blakeman, President of Freedom’s Watch.
The text of the advertisement follows:
Ahmadinejad Is A Terrorist
Columbia University is wrong to give him a platform.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad threatens our nation and the
freedoms we value. He has supported attacks on our soldiers and our allies.
He should be treated as the terrorist that he is.
Yet, while Columbia gives a terrorist like Ahmadinejad a platform to
speak, they refuse to allow the ROTC on campus.
What has happened to this prestigious university?
People who support killing Americans are welcome. But the military that
defends them is not.
Columbia should be ashamed of its actions.
Freedom’s Watch knows that America and the forces of freedom are right.
We know the threat of terrorism is real. And we know Democracy must
prevail.
The terrorists and their appeasers are wrong.
“And God willing, with the force of God behind it, we shall soon
experience a world without the United States and Zionism.”
— Mahmoud Ahmadinejad
