Ecce: Service Dress Khaki.

Two questions: Why did we do away with this uniform?

And why are we bringing it back?

At least we can provide entertainment for the other services… why can’t they just stick with the current look? The khaki blazer reminds me too much of Captain Higgenbottom (sic?) of McHales Navy. Just more stuff to avoid wearing imho. I was always trying to get back into the coveralls each time I had to get in the dress canvas. I think the “less is more” approach is the way to go…

Give me a poopy suit, sneakers and a Ball cap. If it’s a formal occasion I will wear the long sleeve poopy suit with the embroidered Dolphins, name tape and a belt.

    No flat hat, pisscutters only?

  • Enlisted dress whites always seemed too spartan to me. I like that piping.

  • The guy on the far left has his jacket buttoning the wrong way unless he’s a …. OMG.

  • HummerDude

SDK is inadequate compensation for stripping me of my aviation greens, but I’ll take it; if it was good enough for Chester Nimitz, it’s good enough for me. No more Service Dress Yankees either!?! That was the only license I had to dress like Judge Elihu Smails on Caddy Shack…

Other than giving TFU a reason for being am not sure why they’re all hot to bring back SDK.

I wore them as a Mid and as an Ens and never cared for them very much. Sure they look sharp (better than summer whites) but still involve putting on a blouse, long-sleeve shirt, and a tie, not unlike light weight SDB.

Question from the peanut gallery: Does this mean no more officers in dress whites?

  • lex

I don’t think so, but I’m just guessing.

And frankly I’m having a hard time understanding why anyone would want to wear it. I’ve never been in my khakis and said to myself, “Oh, if only I had a blouse and tie on right now, things would be perfect.”

Of course, I am living in Sandy Eggo…

  • From the guys that brought you the blue digital camo and the PRT uniform. Oh joy.

And notice how, yet again, the chief uniform looks exactly like the officer uniform.

  • Very WWII. Except for that stupid garrison cap, which looks especially terrible in this application.

  • my guess would be, you know, they could think of nothing better to spend money on?

  • C-dore 14

Lex—Exactly the way I felt about them. Pretty impractical even in SDGO, let alone Pearl.

The irony was is that they weren’t authorized for official functions or quarterdeck watches (you wore whites for those). You wore them mostly for traveling or going to meetings.

  • Ens Tim

I’m with you Lex. The last thing I need in the 95 degree heat is to put on a coat and tie. It’s not like I already don’t sweat through a flight suit per day down here…

Avast, mates! I was happy to wear SDKs for about 8 years before they were set adrift for reasons never passed down to the JO ranks.
They were worn for QD watches (at least by us LANTFLT “shoes” and everything but the most formal events (change of command, etc). Perhaps not optimal for SDGO’s idyllic clime, but us east coast sailors found the blouse to be a welcome feature most of the time. For normal working routine we would remove the blouse to be in working khaki, (with tie and long sleeve shirt). In summer we would switch to “summer khaki” with the open collar short sleeve shirts. I think today’s officers and chiefs would find SDK a very practical, durable and comfortable uniform.
Much better than many of the other TFU hare-brained schemes!

Oh—I forgot—we also could (read “had to”) wear them when they passed the word “Now all hands shift into the uniform of the day for evening meal”. Maybe they’ll bring that back too.

  • AlbanyRifles

Gee, you Navy guys are getting as wound up as we Army dudes got when “they”came out with the beret…only worse!!!

I can’t wait to see aviator greens with brown shoes!!!!

BTW, the White Hat looks very “Sand Pebbles-ish” like…don’t ou think?

As a grunt, I think they all look pretty cool…makes me think of ENS Parker & LT Carpenter.

    Enjoy

The reason the uniform is changed is everyone is looking a bit shabby in the clothes they already own. How to force them to buy new uniforms? Well, change the uniform! Kind of reminds me of the women’s fashion industry.

  • The service dress khaki looks terrible on a lady. Its a suit-pure and simple. Even the blue coveralls are looking better by contrast.

Aviation greens on the other hand were a uniform I loved.

  • Mike M.

    Uniform, schuniform.

If they were serious about dressing a fighting service, they would authorize sidearms.

  • On the new silly drab camo uniforms: The Navy had gray uniforms, for a while in WWII, but eventually admitted that that was stupid. If the enemy can see your ship, it doesn’t matter what color clothes you’re wearing, he’s going to try to kill your ship and your pale tender body’s splattering will just be collateral damage.

Naval uniforms should be dignified and comfortable, and made in traditional naval colors, dammit.

Raphael Semmes was all WTF about having to wear a gray Confederate Navy uniform, as in, “All Naval Officers in All Countries Always Wear Blue!”

    Or white

  • Bill C

    Justthisguy

FYI, the reason for the grey uniforms during ww2 was a matter of supply. There was not enough blue wool forecast to be available to meet projected demand. A lot of folks today don’t realize we had over 12 million in uniform by 1944, not bad for a total population of 125 mil.

  • sandman

Gee, yet another opportunity for the seaman deuce in the ship laundry to exact the revenge of incompetance upon the officers and chiefs.

  • badbob

    Bunch of crap!

Between this, those horrible jumpsuits and the Walmart blue-green rainsuit BDUs, all I see is a service reaching for relevancy and ‘empowering’ everyone up/down the Chasin of command with their own individual ‘opinion” on what looks good and what the USN should wear…..

We need ships, effective aircraft and subs not designer “outfits”. Ditto- humbug.

  • Cap'n Bill

SO we can’t design/contract/build decent new and needed ships, lets spend some time on uniforms.

And why aren’t “we” considering bringing back Aviation Greens ?
    Cheers
    Bill

As with any decision – look for the money.

That said, I’m not as opposed to SDK as I am to digital blue. At least there’s precedent for it.

I frequently get asked why all the US services have different camouflage patterns now. My answer is usually a variant of “I don’t know” – although I’m thinking about someone establishing a retirement fund. It’s not too late for the CNO to demonstrate the “one team, one fight” concept by abolishing the digital blue and adopting MARPAT for field use. Then we can fix the other mistakes of TFU.

  • Maddog1989

As a Marine Aviator who just got a picture in “greens” it is great to see you swabbies still envious of traditional uniforms we never let go- and Mike M- we just re-armed our watches aboard my station- and the sight of JOs with sidearms does indeed make one think our leadership is serious about this being a fight…

  • Ah, yes, one more thing.

Is this still made of fabric that, if worn to a fire, will melt on the human under it?

I mean, not that there’ve never been shipboard FIRES or anything, much less any fires in, say, the Pentagon…

  • deBarra

They’ll make it fire retardant – for 20 dry cleanings, that is. After that, you need to buy a new set to be safe aboard ship. (Keeps the uniform manufacturers and dry cleaners in business.)

  • Um, sorry, but whatever you all say about them – it is ahem men in uniform.

You guys might not like them (and for reasons that certainly seem justified), but…some of us have no problem with it, no matter what it looks like.

  • steve

Why mess with the dungaree uniform? We went through that @#$%% in 1973. You just have to admire USMC for sticking with what is theirs.
    cpo ret.

  • Note to Lee: I believe the officer from McHale’s Navy you were refering to was Captain Wallace Binghampton!
