Proving once again that the Royal Navy has not lost the ability to innovate, the Admiralty has authorized the CO of HMS Somerset to, well: Blog

For the first time the commander of a Plymouth-based Royal Navy frigate is writing a ship’s blog.

The 185 service personnel deployed on Devonport-based HMS Somerset as well as their families back home can now follow its progress day-by-day.

Cdr Rob Wilson said: “It’s vital, the more families know about what we’re doing, the more I get out of them on board as a result.”

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) confirmed it is behind the move.

Steam catapults. The Fresnel lens. CO’s blogs. What could we not learn from these sturdy jack tars with their hearts of oak, and their smell of elderberries?

How to cook beef, hopefully. The Brits are simply murder on beef.

From the blog the CO seems a good bloke.

  • Yankee Sailor is headed to a DDG and has already been granted permission to blog his XO-dom.

That would be a window into life worth reading…but then he is also an excellent blogger and published writer.

  • Rum, Sodomy, and the Lash?

    Sorry, couldn’t resist the temptation.

  • Just so we’re clear, I’ve only officially been the PXO for six days, so I haven’t even had the opportunity to officially pitch the idea to the CO or the PACFLT PA folks. There’s some good groundwork laid, which some of you have had the opportunity to help with, but it’s not a done deal just yet….

YS… which DDG, if you’re willing to share. I precommed DDG 73, and did my fair share in Engineering. Love to hear which one… I’d offer up some DC advice, but I know you pulled a tour as DCA on a big deck already, so I know that dog won’t hunt!

  • Shoot me an e-mail at sailor –at– yankeesailor –dot– us, and I’ll fill you in.
