Ya… but it took y’all three overtimes to pull it off.
Ruined my whole weekend, that did.
That guy raising his arms up must be pretty pissed.
I went to Notre Dame last year for the UCLA/ND game. It was a great experience to see the campus and the grotto and all the traditions associated with their football program, although it would have been more fun if my team had won. I was absolutely delighted with Navy’s victory, and I know a few ND alums who were sorta pulling for the Middies too. There’s nothing like college football!
As I write this your alma mater is hosting mine, Northern Illinois University. I have little doubt as to the victor. Likely yours…
ELP- That school left His camp a while ago. If He is ticked off- it ain’t about football.
December 1st, here we come!!!!!
Notre Dame victory…
Bowl invitation…
CIC Trophy…
This could be a wonderful year. Nice job, Gents.
And, Coach Johnson, could you find a team you could beat for homecoming next year? Really put a temporary downer on the 10 yr. reunion this year…well, until I got to Ram’s Head Tavern.
Prowler – Navy beat Delaware year after year for homecoming… Kinda like the sacrificial goat!
I was very surprised that Navy lost this year to Delaware.
Meanwhile, Navy hung on against N. IL this afternoon for the win!
10 year reunion? Reminds me of going to a parade a few years back and sitting, by accident, in with a reunion crowd. The comments were priceless like “It’s sure a lot more comfortable sitting here than standing there.”
I felt like a spy…
GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!!
Isn’t this kind of like “In a room full of blind men, the man with one eye is king.”?
Why do you have to be so nasty Nose? Navy won today. Typically, they are 40 lbs under the weight of every other team they play, other than the other Academy teams.
They start off with a disadvantage. They overcome that disadvantage to win. I, for one, cheer them on.
BEAT ARMY!!!
GO ARMY, SINK NAVY!
Cheers
Somehow caught all the right moments of that game while strike planning on ABE. Could tell they weren’t used to all that hootin’, hollerin’, and jumpin’ in CVIC. Cold O’Douls was the best we could muster to celebrate at Rats.
Babs,
1. If I thought Lex was seriously crowing about beating a 1-9 team (2-9 as of last night!!) I wouldn’t have been so nice.
2. If you think I’m mean, please don’t spend any time in a ready room or around a group of pilots.
3. Start off with a disadvantage? Do they wear weighted shoes?
GEO-
Interesting comment you slipped in. I missed the press conference where Notre Dame denounced Jesus. Could you expound?
Thanks
N
Fine, rub it in. However, my plan for this week is to hang a “Go Navy, Beat Army” sign out the office window. Should be interesting (assuming the boss allows it) since we face the HQ building. Luckily the new Deputy commander is a squid.
Nose, First point foremost, yours truly is a committed and convinced orthodox Roman Catholic (as opposed to a cafeteria type). ND, like many many so-called Catholic colleges today, is secular in just about all aspects but name. George Gipp and Knute Rockne wouldn’t recognize the place. That’s my story and I am sticking to it.
GEO6
GEO,
Not arguing with you (yet). All you have said is “this is the way it is.” Do you have any, you know, facts to put forth?
Ok. The gauntlet has been thrown. I will make the assumption you also are a Mackerel Snapper. As for facts, for example, ND’s theology dept has refused to accept subordination to the Church’s Magisterium by refusing to pledge fidelity to it. The term for that particular ascent to the Magisterium excapes me at the moment.
Ah, gents, I believe this is about football.
Navy won the game. Hasn’t happened against the Irish in a while.
And Nose, there are quite a few of us here that have spent time in the Ready Room…get over yourself and have another beer. You won’t be smarter, but you’ll look it. You are a reminder that some people just live to suck happiness from others, and especially when they’re jealous they didn’t go to the Academy.
Prowler, No prob. I’d be happy to take this off line with Nose. I just couldn’t help but slip my first wise-a$$ comment in to see if it stirred up something.
P. Skip,
The ready room comment wasn’t directed at you or anyone but the fetching Miss Babs. If you have ever been in a real ready room, then you would know that anyone – ESPECIALLY a USNA grad, that crowed about beating a team that couldn’t beat my high school would immediately be crushed like a grape in that environment. I have nothing but respect for Lex, not because of what his diploma says, but because he has actually earned it – I assume that he recognizes that and realizes – as I have said before – “I kid because I care.” If I come across as hateful or mean spirited, then that is because you can’t see the big smile on my face as we go back and forth here. BTW – I gave even more grief to my Notre Dame friends for the loss. Lots of good schadenfreud all around, ya know?
I’ll never be smart or smarter, no matter how much beer I drink. If I sucked away your huge thrill that your team beat the gang that couldn’t shoot straight, then I offer my most sincere apology. Jealous I didn’t go to the Academy? You don’t know me, pard. I wasn’t smart enough, didn’t work hard enough in HS, and enjoyed having fun. Going to a military school never crossed my mind, and if it had, the admissions folks would have laughed me out the door. I’m no more jealous of an Academy grad then I am of a Test Pilot. Glad someone wants to do it, but that someone ain’t gonna be me. USNA is a top tier school with a below average sports program, nothing more nothing less.
Have another wine cooler repeat after me: “I’m good enough, I’m smart enough, and, gosh darn-it, people like me.”
Best,
Nose
Geo-
I am interested in what you have to say – not to pick a fight, but simply because I have never heard anyone say that before Hard core/cafeteria or otherwise.
bd1315 and I use Google mail.

Nose
Nose, I nearly choked on my drink. Not nice! LMAO
Are we sure Snake isn’t commenting under someone else’s handle?
Salt? Meet wound.
Yeah, thanks. Like we’ll be forgettin’ that in MY neck of the woods in the next few decades……
Nose,
If you truly do give this much grief to those who you respect, here’s my toast as I’m enjoying my wine cooler…”here’s hoping I never do anything that Nose finds respectable.”
You suck not because you think I missed the point, or that I don’t get your “schadenfreud”. You suck because you’re a mean-sprited person who makes himself feel better by trying to bring other people down. You couldn’t even pass up dumping on someone because they support a team who, after they win their games, have to put on a uniform and serve their country. Pretty low. But, typical of grad-bashers.
Words have meaning, and no, I cannot see your grin as you write something. All I can read is your words, and right now, you sound like a guy who would rather dump on a guy than tell him “good for you”.
You’re a real crowd-pleaser to some, I guess, but you know…not to everyone. Here’s one guy who hopes you learn to bottle your cynicism and add to the conversation rather than bringing it down.
Babs, thanks for your support. I appreciate it, and it means a lot to us grads who cherish nice headlines once in a while.
Wow, I make a pithy comment, you jab, I jab back and all you can come up with is “You suck”?
You need to try to find some tougher ready rooms. I tried to keep it lighthearted and unpersonal but, wow.
Methinks that 20 years after the fact, or whenever it was, you need to get a life that extends beyond “I am a graduate of the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis Maryland, and I am an officer in the United States Navy, and you should salute me every once in a while.”
Does the service of those brave warriors on the football team mean more then the service of any other Midshipman or AOC or (God forbid!) enlisted sailor or marine?
If I am a crowd pleaser, then I hope it’s because I don’t take myself too seriously.
I don’t consider myself one of the dreaded “grad-bashers” (partly because I didn’t graduate at all, my own self) but if I were, I would think it was probably because of those like you who, decades after you have graduated still feel a need to remind all of the rest of us that you were NAVY XX (fill in grad year, please) like that guy in “Heartbreak Hill.”
If I were to tell you that I flew the “Go NAVY, beat ARMY” Hummer fly-by one year, or that some of my best friends are grads, would that help staunch your tears?
On second thought, I’m taking away your wine cooler, you’ve had enough and are waaaayyy too emotional.
Good for you!
Nose
Oops. “Heartbreak Ridge.”
I HATE it when guys get the line wrong!
Nose,
Actually, I’m still in the service, and am currently enjoying some down time after recently being deployed overseas.
I’m proud of everything I’ve done, because I’ve done it for my country, not me. And when someone comes along and tries to take some of the pride away (like enjoying the fact that your team won a tough game) it stings. Yup, it stings.
I don’t know many grads who wave their ring around saying “look at me”, but I do know a lot of grads who proudly wear their ring. It was earned, it was tough, and it means something to us. You will never have enough cliches to take the pride I have for my alma mater, nor will you be able to just “label us” away.
I have never looked down upon the fellow officers who I’ve served with because of where they went to school, nor have I looked down upon the troops I have led because they didn’t go to college. Nor would I dare…who am I to take away from that person just because of where they’ve been? Why, then, is it so easy for people like you to try and take away pride I have in where I’ve been with rude remarks, trying to hide behind “well I was only being funny”.
Don’t you dare insiuate I don’t respect my fellow brethren. How dare you. I trust my fellow sailors with my life, enlisted and officer, and have counted on them in combat. How dare you try label me as “one of those typical Academy guys” without ever knowing me or the service I’ve rendered this country.
That’s why I think you’re a mean spirited person. You try and belittle the officer I am by trying to score a point.
It’s not that I take myself that seriously, it’s that I take my service seriously, and that includes the four long years at the Acaademy. You hide behind a facade of humor, but your words keep revealing a dislike of a certain group of people.
If you do have friends who are Academy grads, I hope you treat them better than you’ve treated me here.
Gee Nose, last year, after they lost to ND I was da bad guy for questioning their Div1A CanoeU compulsion! I’ve stayed away from this post(even though I congratulated Lex offline after the victory) up till now just for that reason.
Personally, I enjoyed the ND game and heck, I’ll admit I even watched ‘em beat N. Illinois this past weekend! Good on ‘em. Just for the heck of it, didn’t AF beat ‘em, too?
To critique Nose, I would have used the blind squirrel finds an acorn anecdote, vice the one-eyed man. Just kidding folks. Please don’t persecute me, you regular Navy bullies. LOL.
On the other, heavier hand, having read this C.S. below brings out “me protective instincts” (not that Nose needs cover…):
re- “they’re jealous they didn’t go to the Academy”
Some of ‘em really believe that, too. Small. Probably think they’re born to da Sea or some such…Gee, I hope that Skippy ain’t short for “Skipper”….
BTW Nose , what’s wrong wid test pilots? LOL.
I say- Go UCONN! Wait till they beat WVU (I hope)!!! Too bad about the Turtle. Nyuk.
b2
Did I miss something in my busy-ness the last few months, or is there a history of Nose being a downer ’round here? ‘Cause I sure don’t have any memory of Nose as a mean-spirited person.
I read Nose’s first comment as a friendly potshot designed to stir up trouble–the kind of thing I’d love to say to Lex in person just to get a rise out of him (somebody has to keep that man humble).
How did it get to the point of people insulting each other over whether they went to “The Academy” or not?
Near as I can tell, it’s pretty hard just to get the attention of someone who can get your application in the door. I’m sure there are a lot of great Naval Officers out there who who never got the notice of the “right people.”
It’s something to be proud of for having overcome a rigorous training and so much more. But it seems to me having USNA on your college diploma says more about opportunities you’ve had (and made the most of) than your fundamental worth and your value to the Navy.
Apologies to our host, who rightly loves his alma mater, but as an outsider looking in at this contre temps: Good grief!

Hey Fbl – How about just mailing your ap into the admissions office and getting the attention of the Academy that way? I know of no one that got the attention of a “right person” in order to get into the Academy…
Next thing you know the Academy was calling us and scheduling visits with the Blue and Gold officer… I can’t imagine who we would have tried to “get the attention” of in order to expedite this process other than the admissions dept. at USNA. We know no one that could possibly help with this process. My loved one got into the Academy on his own merits, not with “help.”
In fact, if I ever gave you the full story of my son applying to the Academy, I think you would laugh your butt off at what naive idiots we were… We had no idea how competitive the process was. We just kept trucking along, keeping up with the boat load of paperwork and requirements…
Be that as it may, yeah, this thread turned into a slam fest so I will add my own slam:
GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!
FWIW, I’ll roger up as an ND grad, and say “Good on Navy.” They beat us in every aspect of that game. I’ll take nothing away from the victory – we may be having a down year, but the team still has talent, and it took guts to beat ‘em. Enjoy your prolonged victory dance, it had to happen some time.
Oh, and GEO6, drop me an e-mail if you are still checking the comments. It is my handle (at) gmail (dot) com.
Babs, forgive me if it sounded like I was impugning your loved one in any way. I was simply making a rather poorly-phrased reference to the Nominations process that applicants have to go through.
Heh! You are certainly forgiven on that score. Believe it or not, Hillary Clinton nominated my son!!! She also sent him a hand written card and called the house to speak to him!
I told my son that if I saw her hanging around the yard I would set the dogs on her!
FbL, Re your comment # 23 above…(cloying smiley face thingie notwithstanding) be advised… I would never…ever sink so low as to do the dastardly act you so flippantly accuse me of…your abject apology, tendered in a timely manner, is expected… Best (ICSFTH)
PS, You crack me up Babs.
Babs, George Pickett was nominated by Abe Lincoln and never would let any of his Southern brothers bad mouth him during that war. Guess that can’t be said of the mother of your offspring.
GEO6
Best not hold your breath, Snake. (IVCSFTH)
