Do it, Navy

Hold your ground! Hold your ground!
Sons of Dahlgren, of Mahan, my brothers,
I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me.

A day may come when the strength of midshipmen fails,
when we forsake our zones
and let the Army running back through the line, but it is not this day.

An hour of celebrating woops and knuckle dragging sojers,
when the Navy goal post comes crashing down,
but it is not this day!

This day we fight!

By all that you hold dear on this good Earth,
I bid you stand, Men of Annapolis!

Beat Army!!!

    Lex,
I hope you can lay claim to penning those immortal words. They’re great. Even if they are a take-off on Sir “Somebodyorother” in Brave Heart. :-)

    GO NAVY! BEAT ARMY!

  • Fontessa

And sink their bones to Davy Jones.

  • F.B.

BEAT ARMY!! I assume most around these parts are watching on TV, not actually going to Ballimore.

    Cap’n,

The Lady Katherine’s eldest brother, unfortunately a Beanie wears two Silver Stars. Thus, today will be a true battle between the forces of True Blue Good and those other guys who dress like Christmas Trees. The Beached Chief’s household will survive.

I echo your sentiments: GO NAVY!

  • My dear fellow, what ever happened to “jointness?” I suppose on this day it has left the field.

As an Army guy, I should be rooting for the black and gold, but I must admit to some mixed emotions.

You see, in a year or two those football players will stomp into the Army, armored in the infallibility of the green O-1, and the arrogance that is the principal distinction of the Academy graduate; some of them will learn and grow and some will rise to high rank through the West Point/Ranger/JSOC mafia, with nary an iota of intellectual or emotional growth from arrogant 2LT, where they’ll cause no end of trouble to all on our side, and be an unknown but mighty comfort to our turbaned foes.

The difference between the academy grad who is productive and the, er, other, is the presence of a degree of introspection and humility. Which might be induced by a thorough drubbing on the playing field. Hence, my divided loyalties.

I note the Navy has a healthy outlet for overweening egos. Maybe we could get some jets, although the Air Force (a fine alternative to military service, I’m sure our host will agreee) already gets hinky about the helicopters, and our coming transport plane — bought because you can never get them to fly into places with the occasional mortar round any more.

I’ve thought this through, and I’m still divided. Go Navy. Go Army. Have a great game one and all. After all, it’s only football.

The greatest football game on planet Earth. Always has been, always will be. Go Navy, beat Army!!!

Lex shall live this day, and see old age,
then yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say ‘To-morrow is Army-Navy college football day.’

Then will he strip his sleeve and show his beer-mug callouses, and boast ‘These wounds I had on Army-Navy college football day.’
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
But he’ll remember, with advantages,
the celebrations of this day.

I grew up in a family that loves college football, and I’ve been watching since I was a little girl. My father and my husband are both Air Force men, but Army/Navy has always been one of my favorite games of the year. I’ll be in the Los Angeles Coliseum rooting for my underdog Bruins today, but I hope for a great game in Baltimore, exciting to the end, and no injuries. Best of luck to both teams!

  • Man, they did…(embarrass themselves!) AGAIN!

  • HmrDrvr

    R. Campbell’s TD return was NINETY EIGHT yards. ’98 sir! (just saying…)

  • SJBill

Looks as though the goat-napping might make the highlight film for Army. Went downhill after that.

  • FbL

Okay, I’m actually feeling sorry for Navy…

  • FbL

Oops! I mean ARMY, of course! (D’oh!!!!).

  • Marianne Matthews

Well … that was truly awesome, Lex! NAVY did it again, bless their hearts. We watched every blessed move in this football-obsessed house, and the welkin rang with shouts of encouragement. I did think you might have allowed Army maybe just one touchdown, just so they can hold their heads up a little. But … I guess you just have to admit it. You guys are the best, no question about it. Six times in a row. Wow.

I forgot to mention the comment Pete Dawkins made in an interview during the game, in which he noted the ‘elegance’ and storied history of the game. Very perceptive man.

    ;-P

    ..until next year!

  • SeniorD

    Cap’n, et al,

Well, it seems the only football game that means anything (I keep hearing words like ‘Super Bowl’ and ‘BCS Bowl but they’re meaningless) is over Navy 38 Army 3. The Lady Katherine is in a snit (the actual words are not meant for polite company such as this) but will persevere until next year.

When Navy beats Army for the SEVENTH STRAIGHT YEAR!

    Go Canoe U.!

  • SoCal Pir8

    All Navy!!
Can’t wait until the 20th. Taking two g’kids to the Poinsetta Bowl. I keep bring up the Academy to them ( 11 and 10). It’s never too early.

  • SJBill

Juss wunnerin’ if Our Humble Scribe was back in B’more watching the game, being (a.) back on the Right Coast this week, (b.) being an alum, (c.) last time wearing the blues, and (d.) of sufficient rank where he might not need an O2 mask.

I sure as He77 woulda been there. ;-)

  • DangerousDan

All I have to say is Great Game by both sides something not necessarily reflected in the score. Well worth the last minute road trip to the game.

Its always better to sing last. However could you please atleast sing the REAL Words.

Now college men from sea to sea
    May sing of colors true,
But who has better right than we
    To hoist a symbol hue?
For sailor men in battle fair
    Since fighting days of old,
Have proved a sailor’s right to wear
    The Navy Blue and Gold.
