I will come into wearing these new uniforms so i have nothing to compare them to but i like the way they look

I can’t wait to get into this uniform. I came in when they were phasing out the the dungarees and brining in the utilities. At the time I didn’t really care either way. However now I share the same sentiment as many of the people in this thread. True that the uniform is not a fashion statement, but the design of a uniform does affect the wearer’s professionalism. The bell bottoms may have been pratical, but I don’t know how I’d feel walking around in a 1970′s style in a 2009 military. The current utilities also make me feel more like a mechanic than a member of the military, I still square them away though. But when I transfer to Norfolk this fall and get into this new uniform I will feel more of a sense of pride and professionalism. Things change, get used to it.

I’m kinda on the fence about the new uniform. the only thing i don’t care for is the fact that corpsmen can’t wear our medical cadeuces on our lapel as we can in the DCUs and woodland BDUs. I really get irritated when people just say “hey Petty officer” and not ” hey HM2″ they don’t know if im a CS, SK, or HM. thats really my only vice with it. at least we don’t look like we work at the jiffy lube anymore. ooh rah!

THIS UNIFORMS ARE GREAT ARE THE PRICES ARE GODD AS WELL; WHAT IS STUPID IS THE FACT THAT WE CAN NOT BE PROUD OF THE OUTSIDE THE BASE IS LIKE THE NAVY IS ASHAMED OF US OR ANY OF OUR UNIFORMS.

      According to navy. mil
“WASHINGTON (NNS) — The Navy Working Uniform (NWU) is now authorized for wear off-base, during routine stops and at eating establishments during the prescribed workday.”

  • AG2

The navy has relaxed the policy on off base wearing now(at least outside of the DC area). You can now make short stops and even eat lunch in the uniform. The following is taken from the Navadmin. NCR is the National Capital Region.

    E. DURING THE PRESCRIBED WORKDAY OUTSIDE THE NCR, ROUTINE SHORT-TERM STOPS AND OFF INSTALLATION DINING IN THE NWU/CUU ARE AUTHORIZED.

This is massively expensive but I do agree that they are more military then what we have had for working uniforms before. The utilities look more like janitor’s uniforms to me.

HM2 – I see that you ground pound with the Marines as well and take pride with wearing the HM insignia, but as with the Service Uniforms, one of the NWUs’ main intent is to identify us all as SAILORS, not just by our unique ratings. Nothing wrong with calling you as “Petty Officer”. When we’re back in greenside wearing the MARPAT cammies, “Devil Doc” is who we are but never forget that no matter what cammies you wear, on your left breast still says “U.S. NAVY”… Semper Fi, Killer!

Ok, I’m fully behind this uniform. I hated the utilities, they were hot, non-durable, and looked like trash no matter what you did. I’m very glad the Navy finally got something that looks military, plus it’s at least 3 times as durable as utilites….and you don’t even have to iron them. Face it, it’s a beautiful thing. Plus they’re much more comfortable than anything with a tuck-in shirt, they don’t look like janitor clothes, they’re all-weather versatile, and you don’t have to polish the boots if you get the right ones. Being a submariner though, I love my coveralls, may they stay forever.

I’d just wish we could wear ‘em in the national capital region. It really sucks lookin at other services (ALL of them) in some kind of bdu while we’re walkin around in stuffy wool garbage (I hate the new service uniform). Which baffles me, apparently the Navy is the only service that thinks SU’s are more “professional” than the uniform type EVERYONE associates with the armed forces.

There are way to many retired squids in here dropping their opinions on our uniforms….move on cut the cord… we (those that participated) voted for these uniforms in the survey that was conducted… we chose these uniforms not big navy.

To be completely honest, I like this uniform. Its about time that the Navy gave us a working uniform that made us look like we were in the military and not a gas station attendant. On the other hand, I completely disagree that the rules and regulations for wearing this uniform states that you cannot wear this anywhere that civilians can see you in them. I thought the point of giving us a new uniform to wear was so that we people would recognize us as U.S. Navy Sailors and possibly give the Navy some free advertisement.

Perhaps I am just “old school/ Old Navy” I like the BB, the bottons and the dixie cup! Nothing IMO looks sharper than a line on the main deck of white hats in pressed and starched denim and chambray! To me these things no matter which branch and what color just look like PJ’s Fair Winds and Following Seas mates!

I cant stand these uniforms. Too hot, buttons won’t stay on, and the cost is rediculous. The utilities were fine and the summer whites and Johnny Cash’s were our best looking uniforms.
