While the Berkeley City Council misfits leer and gibber, another Marine has walked into the clearing at the end of the path – PFC Ray Jacobs, one of the Marines who raised the original flag that flew atop Suribachi at Iwo Jima.
We are diminished.

Semper Fi, PFC Jacobs. I hope your buddies met you in the clearing and your passage was a gentle one.
He is the infinite gainer, and with his friends again.
Yes, we are diminished. However, we are blessed that he lived.
Ave atque vale… indeed…Best
Can’t help but think of my uncle Alex, another Marine PFC, with those other brave and noble souls like PFC Jacobs, every time I am reminded of That Island Battle. Rest in Peace.
And the only thing the MSM can talk about this morning is Eddie Adams’ 1968 photograph of the shooting of a VC infiltrator in Saigon by then South Vietnamese National Police Chief General Nguyễn Ngọc Loan. Amazing! What would I have done if I’d been in General Loan’s shoes? I’d have shot the b**** too.
We stand in awed wonder at the sacrifices others have made for us. We can only work hard to make sure that their efforts continue to be acknowledged and that we ourselves make some small effort to pass along a country that is free.
Thank you Mr. Jacobs. Rest now.
