That “resurgent” Taliban you keep hearing about

Sounds a bit more like the keystone cops:

Militants ambushed an opium poppy eradication force in southern Afghanistan, sparking clashes that left 25 Taliban fighters and a policeman dead, police said Thursday. Four other militants died when a bomb went off…

Last year was the deadliest in Afghanistan since the 2001 U.S.-led invasion. More than 6,500 people — mostly militants — were killed in violence linked to the insurgency, according to an Associated Press count.

They keep surging like this, and pretty soon the problem’s solved.

  • We’re here to save your society. But don’t worry, we won’t be leaving until we destroy your economy. It’s for our chil’run. Nice yurt, BTW.

  • One can hope, right?

TOM ~ are you serious? You’re not honestly sitting there, criticizing the fact that we are working to eradicate opium poppies, are you? YGBSM.

  • But, but, but… The Taliban are using more and more suicide bombers. Mean, evil, SCARY suicide bombers.

Why, everyone knows that suicide bombers are the most effective and terrifying use of force on the planet. They’ve been beating the crap out of the Americans in Iraq for years.

    Just ask Harry Reid…

I agree that the poppy fields are problematical. On the one hand, we don’t want more heroin out there. On the other, we’re fighting human nature in one of the most primitive countries in the world, where growing poppies can net a local farmer ten times what he gets for wheat or barley.

That local farmer is far more interested in what he can make for his family than what happens to some idiot addict in Europe or America, although I suspect a lot of this crop goes to Iran and other nearby countries.
