Copting out

Zacharia Boutros – an Egyptian born Coptic priest living in the US – is making quite a name for himself among his former countrymen:

Botros is an unusual figure onscreen: robed, with a huge cross around his neck, he sits with both the Koran and the Bible in easy reach. Egypt’s Copts — members of one of the oldest Christian communities in the Middle East — have in many respects come to personify the demeaning Islamic institution of “dhimmitude” (which demands submissiveness from non-Muslims, in accordance with Koran 9:29). But the fiery Botros does not submit, and minces no words. He has famously made of Islam “ten demands,” whose radical nature he uses to highlight Islam’s own radical demands on non-Muslims.

Is he winning hearts and minds, or is he painting a target on himself and his own oppressed minority?

Or is there any difference?

Update: I bet some folks are fitna’ be tied. The Geert Wilders film is up on liveleak. There’s some ugly stuff in there – definitely not for weak stomachs.

As propaganda goes, it’s extremely well executed. Prolly helps that, unlike the Blood Libel or Protocols of the Elders of Zion, it’s all IRL.

It’s really damning when they quote you like that. With video.

Liveleak has some good advice behind their free speech defense:

A person has a simple, clear choice about whether to view this film. No one is being forced to view it and nor is it being broadcasted on every channel on their television set. If you click on media simply to be annoyed, it is pointless to blame others for your choice.

definitely not to be making light of the good Reverend, but these folks have been flying under the radar in the face of oppression for a loooong time….

they define the phrase, “the Dude abides..”

Yes, I think the Copts already are/ have been targets for a long, long time.

The only Copt I know personnally also wears the giant wooden cross, as if to say, YES, I AM A CHRISTIAN.

Wow. Somebody did some serious axe-grinding making that film. Not saying it may not be true, but it reminded me of “Triumph of the Will” and had shades of “Birth of a Nation.” Made me wonder what a movie would look like if someone quoted a bunch of passages from Revelation and the O.T., then accompanied with images from the Crusades.

‘Course there is that difference that the Crusades were then, and this is now.

  • Something about ummm, the Renissance? The “enlightenment”?

It’s one thing to disagree with another person, but when that person is overtly threatening my life, and all that I hold dear, his right to free speech is trumped by my right to defend myself, and my obligation to defend my culture and way of life. So I guess I only have one thing to say:

    “ON THE WAY!!!”

  • Wow! That is a pretty “powerful” movie to say the least. Sometimes, I feel that as Americans we take so much for granted. When you see with your own eyes what goes on in the world around us it induces fear deep within me. Fear in regards to respect for the many men and women who have given their lives to protect me and our citizens from that type of persecution. Those Jihadist are a scary & sick bunch. It also made me think of a clip that I saw on the news the other day of the people in Tibet. Now, mind you I really have no idea about all of the details involved with Tibet but what struck my heart was watching people who were standing for what they believe (what ever that may be. I need to read more news LOL!) and being dragged bye their hair and beaten for it. That is so sad. It shames me that so many Americans take for granted the blood shed so that we may have the freedoms and the protection that we do have. It shames me that so many take for granted that gift so freely given to us through the lives of those who gave all. Thanks for sharing that Lex. I guess it just struck me in a different but deep way.

Hey, can anyone get a copy of that film over to the high side? Underway, very limited NIPR bandwidth, if I can get is as an MPEG on a higher net, I’d REALLY REALLY appreciate it. Lex has my high-side, if you’ve got it there and can send it to me, please contact Lex for the info (and Lex, thanks for jumping under that bus for me, we appreciates it).

The movie has been removed for the safety of the LiveLeak staff. To my disappointment I wasn’t able to view it.

Holy schnikes!! LiveLeak receives death threats over a video that does little more than quote the Koran and show images of admitted Muslim violence.

Ne’er you fear: YouTube has it (although you do have to log in to see it):
