    Lex,

Thank you for highlighting Taxi1′s comments.

My hat is off to Taxi1 and the others who are taking on this demanding task. Not only are they filling a role that is absolutely crucial (and life-saving for those on the ground) but they are also pathfinders to the future.

The human interface must be upgraded to give the operators more of the “feel” that pilots of the “pointy-ended planes” get. At least a stick and rudder pedals. Some mini-CCD cameras spaced around the UAV should give them better situational awareness of their craft, and the bandwidth used by slow-scan CCDs should not be prohibitive.

The future will be (first) flying wingman to manned fighters and (second) replacing them for nearly all jobs. Some day there will be hypersonic UAVs that will pull 30 Gs protecting our naval forces. Heaven help any manned craft that attempt to engage them. They will be capable of engaging missiles.

Great thread (w/bonus entertainment factor). As if the discussion wasn’t lively enough, see today’s writeup of SECDEF’s comments re “Pentagon Chief Says USAF Should Do More”, with specific mention of UAV support (“like pulling teeth”). Ouch.
