USS Kitty Hawkis set to visit Hong Kong this weekend- for the last time. Lan Kwai Fong, Wan Chai, Tsim Tsa Shui. Dust ’til Dawn. High tea at the Peninsula, just for a change of pace. Joe Bananas – used to be off limits back before ’97. With the expat exodus afterwards, all are welcome. If I was as clever as I’d like to be, I’d find a way to meet them over there. Just for the professional obligation that’s in it.

The best thing about Hong Kong was the sense that anything – anything at all – might happen. It was almost electrifying.

Hopefully our hosts are in full concurrence about the visit this time. Because the FDNF guys are probably feeling a little like Charlie Brown being offered another kick at the football.

  • Probably not ‘electric’ in the intensity level but my favorite memory from my last Hong Kong visit was playing video games with a bunch of kids who had just gotten out of school. We had a blast, killing aliens and such, in a little arcade off some side street.

  • My friend who works there, has vowed to stay the hell away from Wanchai till KHK leaves. He’s holing up in Sai Kung and hoping for the best.

As for Joe Bananas, its really gone down hill since Bulldogs opened 1 flight above it. Last time I was in HK, they did not even have a band on Saturday night.

Also given the current crackdown on any fun on Kitty Hawk-it will be interesting to see what kind of “buddy system” they come up with. A shame-because Hong Kong is a great town to prowl solo………….

Mmm, Jimmy’s Steakhouse. It beat the hell out of dehydrated hocky pucks. I never much got into the bar scene there. We spent so much time in other ports (cough, Subic) that I was generally partied out, and just wanted the respite of some nice quiet, civilized surroundings. Of course, there was this one time I was in the Junior’s bar in the CFC chatting up some lovely young daughters of British Govt. officials when this drunk submariner came up and showed us his new tatoo (first step was to unzip his fly so we could see it.) Things did get a little interesting after that. You know what they say about a man in uniform :-)

With maybe 2 weeks of a coal supply, and 70% of there power coal derrived, I’d say they might be greasin’ the tracks a bit, even if they do own quite a bit of IOUs from us. Time to place nice, maybe?
