"Sign on, young man, and sail with me. The stature of our homeland is no more than the measure of ourselves. Our job is to keep her free. Our will is to keep the torch of freedom burning for all. To this solemn purpose we call on the young, the brave, the strong, and the free. Heed my call, Come to the sea. Come Sail with me." -- John Paul Jones
"Pardon him, Theodotus; he is a barbarian, and thinks that the customs of his tribe and island are the laws of nature" --George Bernard Shaw, "Caesar and Cleopatra"
"And those who were seen dancing were thought to be insane by those who could not hear the music."--Friedrich Nietzsche
"A kind Providence has placed in our breasts a hatred of the unjust and cruel, in order that we may preserve ourselves from cruelty and injustice. They who bear cruelty, are accomplices in it. The pretended gentleness which excludes that charitable rancour, produces an indifference which is half an approbation. They never will love where they ought to love, who do not hate where they ought to hate."--Edmund Burke
“You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours.”--General Sir Charles Napier

But what PPE will be required? Face shield? Helmet? Knee pads? Reflective vest?
Curious timing on this announcement. . .I wonder if they maybe just were trying to take the heat away from the “incident” (and handling thereof) earlier in the week.
Yo Humble,
One of your friends screwed with your AVATAR. Better get a real plane on there, quick like!!
Couldn’t be any less safe than Class of ’80′s Herndon. First time women climbed, and every time one got near the top, she was pushed, kicked or thrown off. Big scandal over Tee shirts before reading NGOH (or worse). I heard it took them over 3 hours. My Class (’81) was a little more civil. PURELY coincidental, but it took us 81 minutes.
Sigh. . .yes, my ‘friend’ BigNavy decided it would be a fun joke. . . I’m still not laughing. . .
Turns out a 60 NSS was not enough to get tailhook. Last week. But all those guys with 51′s 3 weeks ago? Clearly, they will make better ‘hookers. But I’m not bitter or anything. . .
The plebes have all broken out their handy laminated pocketsized ORM cards and decided that in the furtherance of tradition, Herndon will be climbed…………using a ladder! So no major changes at all.
Humble,
I feel your pain, brother. No one, NO ONE, NOT ONE OF US, wants to fly the Hummer. But whaddayaknow? I had a great 20 years doing it!
I had better grades than those that got strike the week before and the week after me. It’s life, and you went there for a reason. Must be they need your leadership!
Have fun, kick ass, take names.
At least you will get a 737 type rating!
Best,
Nose
Yeah, I hear ya. And that’s basically my attitude toward it. All flying is good flying, in my book. And I WAS able to dodge the helo draft.
Not my first choice, but it should be cool. As long as you hook guys would get off my back.:)
“You can’t stop the waves, but you can learn to surf.”
Glad there won’t be revisions to the climb and I’m not trying to bad mouth upper level people at all; but from my understanding, as being a Mid… a “youngster,” if you will, a lot of plebes are on “0″ block training this summer; I’ve heard that there are some companies have as little as 7 plebes not on that training and able to do Sea Trials – a newer tradition here, since ’98, and then subsequently Herndon. I’m pretty sure my company only has 9 plebes available to do the two events. My plebe year, only a few exceptions were giving 0 block training; whereas this year, it seems like it was given out like candy to the plebes.
O well… At least the ones that are there will have the thrill that is getting a classmate to the top and switching out covers.
They may well have succeeded in reaching the Herndon pinnacle, but if what I saw on “Carrier” was accurate, none of them will ever have the opportunity of becoming a genuine Shellback. Nuthin’ but a watered-down version of what used to be (and as a result, mean), now a steel beach exercise in frat-boy silliness with the requisite doses of PCness and mediocrity added by the Command. They call that ‘Crossing the Line’, you say? Blecchhh.
Where’s that Jeff Bacon Broadside cartoon about the plane the guy in Officer and a Gentleman got?
I did find this from Bacon that might be interesting…
Oh yeah-for the new airdale, it could be like this instead…
Chap – That AWACS cartoon? That’s funny right there! We used to call the AWACS the “Tube of Colonels” because that was about how useful they were!
Bobble – With respect to “frat-boy silliness” it’s obvious that you have never been in a Fraternity. My initiation was a week long and made “old school” crossing the line ceremonies look like the one you saw on “Carrier.”
Nose -
Nope, I never have. If I have offended your Greek sensibilities, I apologize.
bobble
bobble, you certainly do not need to apologize. Just wanted to point out that unlike the Navy, the PC police don’t generally run fraternities.
Cheers,
Nose
