As for my simile about the pig...all it means is that no matter how you sugar coat an organization or a person the simple fact remains that they are what they are...in this instance a gun for hire mercenary, e.g. a Hessian, a Highlander, et als, no matter how heroic or covered in glory he is...he still is and always will be a mercenary. If you do the same thing without pay or as a volunteer you're a vigilantee. I suspect that the profit motive isn't really the deciding factor here, it's more about proper command and control.
